All you have to do is conjugate them with the preterite endings. 

Instead of grabbing a handfull of cactus, grab all these verb changes.

This is because they are considered Irregular Verbs. Which means that they have an entirely different set of words for their preterite conjugations.

You've heard of boot changers, now you have sandal changers. Someday you'll be through the whole spectrum of footwear. Just kidding.

Sandal changers only change in the He/She/It and they/them point of views. 

Here's how it is. 
Let's say you have seguir. You want to say Pedro slept. Since it is in 3rd person you will have to change the O to U. Making it now Pedro durmir. Now you have to change the ending. 

Normally it would just be durmo, but now you have to use ió for the He/She/It conjugations. Making it Pedro durmió. 

Also, in the Yo form Dorme will become dormí.
