Self-Assessment Reflection

The self-assessments were extremely eye opening in regard to what I view as strengths or as areas of improvement. When I first received my results from the Big 5 assessment, I was happy to see very high scores in areas like openness and agreeableness, as these are aspects of myself that I typically think of as inherently "good". After completing the assessment for IRM modes, I began to reflect on how my agreeableness may play a part in my hesitancy to practice in the collaborating and instructing mode. I often relinquish control of choices to other people in order to avoid disagreement and have a hard time being the initiator in interactions for fear of the other party not being in agreeance. While I still believe being agreeable is incredibly helpful, especially in a profession that takes pride in utilizing client autonomy, these assessments have helped me recognize that the degree of my agreeableness may counteract or supersede other aspects of myself that are just as important when examining my therapeutic use of self.

My results from the Froehlich Communication survey furthered my recognition that I want to break down some of my tendencies to agree for the sake of others. I scored myself a 7 for keeping my mind free from distractions while listening, and a 7 for communicating well on teams by listening to multiple perspectives and sharing mine. I don't consider myself a distracted listener in the general sense, as I can find myself completely immersed as a listener or observer in conversations. The issue is that I'm "distracted" by finding points in the dialogue that I can quite literally agree with, and making sure to not respond with anything that could possibly trigger conflict or argument. The same goes for my lower score regarding team communication; I have no issue listening, understanding, and even balancing multiple perspectives, but I do have an issue with finding the assurance to share mine.

Another result of the assessments that stood out to me was the difference between my neuroticism percentage in the Big Five assessment and my overwhelming "blue" result of the True Colors assessment. I scored rather low for neuroticism and scored very high for "blue". On the color spectrum, I interpreted "blues" as people who are very in touch and expressive with their own emotions, as well as others. Explanation of the neuroticism percentage included "more likely to brush off... and move on". While neuroticism often relates to "negative" emotion, these results prompted me to reflect on how I experience my own emotions versus how I experience others. I tend to be much more in touch with other's emotions, in all forms of relationships, and often put the importance of their emotions before my own. I will always consider my thoughtfulness towards how others feel one of my most important strengths, but I have began to reflect on my absence, or brushing off and moving on, towards my own emotions. I think independently diving into my own emotional experiences would strengthen my own emotional vulnerability and in turn further strengthen my abilities of empathy and understanding.

1. Set boundaries for agreeableness - Over the next 30 days, I will make conscious effort to consider why I'm agreeing to something, whether in discussion, collaboration, or even just day to day situations. Using a daily journal, I will tally two factors; the instances of consideration, and the instances where I ultimately decided to refrain from agreeing and instead offered/chose another point.

2. Tap into my own emotional experiences - With the use of the same 30-day daily journal, I will reflect on what emotions I felt throughout the day, where I physically felt them, and reflect on how I honestly feel about having that emotion.

3. By the end of the semester, I will watch 2 TedTalks from their curated playlist "How to Talk About Your Feelings".

Goal Reflections:

1. Set boundaries for agreeableness:
I did meet my goal, or have begun to, and did so by creating a routine out of it. Working on my agreeableness and definitively saying I have met that goal is challenging for me because it’s a trait of mine that is ingrained in my personality. I think it will take much more time to truly set boundaries around my agreeableness but I feel like I have achieved the goal in regard to this project specifically. I initially had trouble with how I was recording my tallys using my journal and found success once I started using an app called “Finch” that has daily reflection exercises. I found it easy to consider why I’m agreeing during dialogue or decision-making and started to find it quite liberating to disagree in situations where I wanted to, but would typically agree for the sake of agreeing.

2. Tap into my own emotional expression:
I met my goal for tapping into my own emotional expression and did so very smiliarly to my goal for setting boundaries. I found it much easier to track how I was feeling when I began to use the Finch app, but I did continue to use my daily journal to express why I was feeling a certain way. Another habit I began after setting this goal was audio journaling, which was extremely helpful in achieving this goal because I was able to journal at any time by creating a voice memo on my phone. I think this goal was so easily achieved because the act of expression and diving deeper into my feelings became helpful and gratifying as my stressors ebbed and flowed this semester.

3. Watch 2 TedTalks from their curated playlist "How to Talk About Your Feelings":
I achieved this goal by watching Brene Brown’s “The Power of Vulnerability” and Elizabeth Lesser’s “Say Your Truths & Seek Them in Others”. I met this goal realitively easy, most likely because it was short-term, low time commitment, and I enjoy Ted Talks. I met this goal much later in the semester and it was helpful comparing myself and my growth to some of the points touched on in both talks. I plan on continuing to listen/watch “self help” media like these talks.

1. Because of the successful reflection I had after completing my goal to watch TED Talks for Therapeutic Use of Self, I have decided to make it a goal to watch a TED Talk from the Leadership playlist by the end of this semester. I will reflect on how it makes me feel about my personal concepts and values of leadership.

2. I will complete in an Interprofessional Event next semester. I believe the IPE events are the perfect "just-right" challenge that can help me increase my confidence in my projection of ideas within a team. It's also the perfect way to possibly take the lead as the only O.T. student within the group.

3. I will co-initiate and co-lead a running group, geared towards my cohort, over the next 4 semesters. Leading a running group not only strengthens my leadership traits that encompass encouragement and building connections but also forces me into a leadership role.

4. I will continue to explore the possibilities for a service learning project this semester and develop a team that will work to complete the project during our time here at U.N.E.

5. I will read Brené Brown's "Dare to Lead" by next year. I have listened to several podcasts and TED talks with Brené and her insights and beliefs on leadership resonate with me. Dare to Lead focuses a lot on developing the potential to lead and doing so with self-love and awareness, both of which are goals of mine that have translated from T.U.S. now into leadership.

I want to be viewed as a leader that genuinely cares for the well-being of those that choose to follow. I am determined to be able to utilize confidence of my own knowledge to educate others on the problems at hand while remaining open to new ideas, new thoughts, and new paths.

One of my most prominent strengths in regard to leadership is my attention to how others are feeling. Between my assessments in the Therapeutic Use of Self course and the assessments in this Leadership course, it's evident that I pay a lot of mind to, and make decisions based off of the feelings and thoughts of those that I'm working with.

I perceive this as a strength because of my own lived experiences. In the past, I have valued those that lead with genuine empathy. I also thought about the evidence my peers provided to support their presented leadership theories, like Leader-Member exchange, and how these studies indicated that the ability of a leader to cultivate meaningful relationships with their team members often created better environments.

Opportunities for Growth

An opportunity for growth that I would like to emphasize throughout my leadership journey is heavily influenced on two recurring themes within myself; my confidence in myself and my habit to agree. My previous goals in my Therapeutic Use of Self course were heavily influenced by these both, and they largely go hand-in-hand. I have made the habit to step back and agree when working with others rather than step forward, voice my ideas, and lead. In my opinion, this has become a pattern because of the lack of confidence I have in myself and capabilities.

I don't believe stepping back and following is a bad thing, and there are certain situations where my strengths fit better as a member or follower. But, there are also certain situations where my strengths could positively impact a team. I want to continue to work on my agreeableness and grow my confidence so that I feel capable of stepping into a leadership role.
