(1) How did you feel about this experiment? (2) What is racism, and how does it differ from and/or relate to stereotype, prejudice and discrimination? (3) Do you think this kind of experiment is relevant/worthwhile today?

I felt like the people who did not experience being discriminated were not able to wrap their minds around the experiment. It also made me realise that you learn everything from when you are child, if a child overhears racism in a home - they too will carry it out in adulthood. But if a child is shown that colour does not define anything, they will not see “colour” thus not discriminate either.

Especially when she stated “you will not play with the brown eyed people during lunchtime” but it was again proven in adults. It does show that racism is a human made concept that we all pick up on due to what others may tell, and stereotyping based of the colour of someone’s skin

I think it is so interesting that it took children only 15 minutes and adults not that much longer to turn on each other. This never separate them before but as soon as an authority figure tries to divide them they developed these beliefs. It would be interesting to ask them whether they thought they were acting independently and whether they would individually own up to having this belief or whether cognitive dissonance has a role to play.

As Elliot mentioned, judging based on skin is no different to judging based on eye colour in regards to the science of it. However creation of social views that tend to group people on a singular aspect, often prevent people from recognizing it as bad, becoming complacent because it the norm. Failing to actually consider that such perceptions tend to be one dimensional. Which is why Elliot’s analogy was particularly useful as it allows people to see discrimination in a different context to avoid mindlessly labeling.

Racism is the belief that one race is superior or inferior to others, leading to unequal treatment. Stereotypes are oversimplified beliefs about a group which often amplifies racism. Prejudice is a negative attitude or feeling towards a group, in this context race, of which is learnt throughout our lives. Discrimination is unfair treatment based on a trait such as skin colour, reinforcing stereotypes and prejudice.
