I have learnt the 4p’s of marketing, plus the added 3 p’s which form the Marketing Mix and how important these tools are when applied correctly for a business to reach their marketing objectives. Reflecting on seminars in class such as the Simba vs Aldi pillow I can apply Kolb’s Experimental Learning Cycle. (See appendix 1) Kolb’s theory has 4 parts to the sequence and each part shows understanding of how we learn from experience. Completing all 4 parts of the cycle is important but not all will as we each have different learning styles (Bassot, 2016) Starting with the Concrete Experience of the theory, in the activity we looked at a product made from two different companies and how applying the marketing mix to them shows how value can be created. Upon reflective observation of the seminar, I researched into both companies and looked at how they advertise their product. This led me onto the abstract conceptualisation part, the breaking down of the 7p’s and comparing how the two companies apply the method to their product helped me to achieve an understanding of why customers would be more inclined to purchase the more expensive product, the Simba pillow. For the final part of the theory, I actively experimented through looking at customer reviews and how the companies promoted the product. The two companies have completely different selling methods. Simba have an impressive website showcasing their pillow explaining each component of the product and how it could help to reduce snoring. Whereas Aldi, state that it’s an anti-snore pillow but only have one feature, that being the shape of the pillow. I found the price of the Simba pillow could be justified by the quality of materials and technologies used along with the impressive marketing techniques and trusted brand name. Looking back, I was able to demonstrate my understanding of using the marketing mix and applying it to why it helps to create value.

Looking at feedback from my critical friends I understand that I need to organise my time better for studying so that I don’t become overwhelmed and can prepare better for my assignments. I also need to believe in myself more as this can have an impact on my preparation and learning. I also feel I need to ensure I read around the topics a little more to give me a better understanding.
