Collect Data: gather data from various sources, such as classroom assessments, homework, and standardized tests. Get as much information on the family background as well, as it might give you detail on the language the child uses at home, or if they have a possible medical condition.

    3. Engage with the Student: get to know your students and try to understand their perspective on their struggles and any challenges they might be facing. This might require adjustment for young learners

Language Proficiency Assessment: Assess the student's proficiency in the language of instruction. This includes evaluating their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in both their first language (if applicable) and the language of instruction.

Academic Performance Analysis: Compare the student's academic performance in subjects that are less language-dependent (e.g., maths) with those that are more language-intensive (e.g., language arts). A significant discrepancy may indicate a language need rather than a learning disability.

Response to Language Support: Implement targeted language support strategies (e.g., ESL instruction) and monitor the student's progress.

Comprehensive Evaluation: If there are persistent challenges despite language support, conduct a comprehensive evaluation to identify any underlying learning disabilities. This should involve all the teaching team and/or learning support.

It is also important to keep the communication open and know the student's medical background if necessary. This would help tailoring the help and address specific needs.

Referral to Specialists: If initial interventions do not lead to improvement, refer the student to specialists such as a school psychologist, special education teacher, or speech-language pathologist for further evaluation.
