Walter Lee Younger. Walter is married to Ruth and has a son, Travis. He lies with his wife, son, mom, and sister. Walter is desperate for success and money; he is also focused on getting his business to help with his finances. Walter believes that once he starts a business, he will finally have all the money he will ever need. All he wants is to be rich and live the life that all the rich white people do. Since Walter doesn't have a lot money he can't provide for his family, this makes him feel helpless.

Walter Lee is compassionate. “I have been married eleven years and I got a boy who sleeps in the livingroom -- and all I got to give him is stories about how rich white people live…” (p. 34). As the quote shows, Walter can be described as compassionate because he feels sympathy for Travis. He is upset with himself because he can't provide a room or a real bed for his own son. He feels bad that his kid doesn't have a life like the rich people do. Walter hates how he can only tell the stories and not live them.

Walter and his family do not have the best house, or the best car, or anything really. So, feeling sympathy for him and his family would only be right. Walter doesn't feel like a man because he can't give his family anything they need or want. One of Walter's strengths is his determination. He works and tries to get a business by owning his own bar. Once he owns this bar he will be able to have the money he needs.

Walter feels like he has the whole world on his shoulders. Since Walter can't provide for his family he feels as if there is a weight on his shoulder. He wants to feel like the man but he can't if he can't give them anything. Walter takes responsibility of all of them. He has trouble with this because his mom takes over many times. He wants to feel like he is the most important person in the house.

Popular Verse of the Swahili Tradition - Lyndon Harries
A poor man doesn’t know
how to eat with a rich man.
When he eats fish
he begins with the head.

Poverty is no state
for a mortal man.
It turns him into a beast
fit for feeding on grass.

Poverty is no right thing
when it falls to a man’s lot,
though he be noble-born
he has no success.

This poem describes Walter because sometimes he doesn't know how to act. One line says "A poor man doesn’t know how to eat with a rich man." this helps describe Walter because he isn't really kind when around other people. Even people with money, he does not act that proper around them. Another line states "Poverty is no state or a mortal man." this line basically is saying that no real man has poverty. Like stated earlier, Walter doesn't feel like a man because he doesn't provide for his family like a man should.

The lyrics relate Walter because every cent he has, he handles it cautiously. When it says "I'm gonna hang on to it till that eagle grins" it is basically saying that the person only gets a dollar everyone once in a blue moon, like Walter. Again, he doesn't have a lot of money and he tries to provide it to his family and not just himself. Another line in the song is "In your pocket, not one penny" This just shows how they are so unfortunate that they barely even have a penny in their pockets. This song is perfect to explain Walter and how he is.

The theme in Raisin in the Sun is money. The whole book is based on the finances of Walter and his family. Walters dad passed away and they get a $10,000 insurance check. Walter believes this will help them a lot, but things take a trunign point. "Mama: “Son, how come you talk so much ‘bout money?” Walter: “Because, it is life, Mama!” Mama: “Oh—so now its life. Money is life. Once upon a time freedom use to be life—now its money. I guess the world really do change…” Walter: “No—it was always money, Mama. We just didn’t know about it.'” (p. 74). All Walter wants is money to provide for his family, and through the book they struggle to get money.

The theme in Fences is generational differences. Troy is a really old man with 3 kids, Lyons, Cory, and Raynell and they all have different moms. Troy is married to Rose, and they live together with their son Cory. The different generations in this movie really show the relationship between Troy, the dad, and Cory, the son. In Troys mind, they are still living around the time Troy was a teen. Cory wants to play football but Troy thinks he isn't going to make it far because he is colored. Yes, they are still racist but it is still different from when Troy was his age. Troy's way of thinking is very old fashioned, he has not adapted to the new ways of the world.

Raisin in the Sun is about how Walter needs and wants money to help provide his family. He wants what is best for them, Walter wants to be the man of the house. The theme is money. Walter just wants money. Fences is about how Troy has problems with his family. Troy tries to do what is best, but it never ends up being the right thing. The theme is generational differences. Troy will never understand the way the everyone else thinks. He is stuck on the old fashion way of living he doesn't even try to adapt.

Fences and Raisin in the Sun can be related in many ways. Walter and Troy both have their own way of thinking. They both try to do the best thing and they always end up messing it all up. Whatever they try to do, it doesn't help. They also can be very different. They are different because Walter tries the best for his family, but thinks just don't worry out for him. But on the other hand, Troy thinks he is doing the best for his family but it is the complete opposite. The themes picked above are different. They are different because in Raisin in the Sun, Walter wants money. In Fences Troy just tries to get money, but is not being the best about it.
