Kaufman, Stephen. "Most Americans Believe Smoking Should Be Banned in Public Places." Tobacco and Smoking, edited by Susan Hunnicutt, Greenhaven Press, 2009. Opposing Viewpoints. Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints, link.gale.com/apps/doc/EJ3010170280/OVIC?u=cobb90289&sid=bookmark-OVIC&xid=e117d24e. Accessed 6 Mar. 2024. Originally published as "Americans Increasingly Opposed to Smoking in Public Places," http://montevideo.usembassy.gov, 21 Feb. 2006.

Smoking bans are becoming more popular worldwide, and are changing the way Americans view the action. Enforcing smoking bans will be beneficial to the people and their overall health, and reduce many health risks that come later in life. The article elaborates on how the public is now more open to smoking bans in todays world. Many bars and restaurants no longer allow people to smoke indoors. This will in turn, benefit the people's well being. Many areas around the world are completely smoke free as no smoking signs are put up everywhere. This also discourages younger generations from starting the habit to begin with. This article was intended for a general audience, as it gives good factual evidence, but is not so in depth that only experts could understand. The author also does a decent job of explaining how smoking bans are effective, however, they could have been more persuasive about the topic instead of just listing several facts. This article helps to clarify why smoking bans are actually useful in todays world because they prevent people from using the cigarette, as there could be consequences if they did. They author is also more bias toward smoking bans, as they do not discuss the counter argument or even address it. The author did however, do a good job gathering information from different sources and providing accurate information to the reader.

"Smoking Bans in Public Places Are Beneficial." Tobacco and Smoking, edited by Kelly Wand, Greenhaven Press, 2012. Opposing Viewpoints. Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints, link.gale.com/apps/doc/EJ3010170404/OVIC?u=cobb90289&sid=bookmark-OVIC&xid=91671a6f. Accessed 6 Mar. 2024. Originally published as "Reasons for Banning Smoking in Certain Public Outdoor Areas," ash.org.

Smoking bans are useful as they reduce health risks for many people, and prevent younger generations from being in contact with the chemicals. No smoking signs are very beneficial to the public. Even though smoking in open areas such as beaches and parks may seem alright, there are still chemicals that people could breathe in, and this could be detrimental to someone's health. Discarded cigarettes' also pose a threat to children as they often pick them up on beaches, and then get their hands close to their face, coming into contact with the harmful substance. Cigarettes' that are not thrown away properly also risk causing a fire if not blow out entirely. This article was meant for the general audience, informing them of the risks that smoking could have on the people around them. The author did a decent job with the appeal, as it was interesting to read. However, it became very repetitive, and boring to read toward the end. The source helps to clarify the topic, providing valid reasons as to why no smoking signs should be enforced in public spaces. One weakness is that it does not address the counter argument, making it very one-sided and bias. This article was relevant to the topic, and useful in that it gave many reasons as to why smoking is bad, and encouraging no smoking signs to be established around all public places.

"Smoking Bans Are Misleading"

Accessed 6 Mar. 2024. Originally published as "The Real Reason Behind Public Smoking Bans," PBS NewsHour, 8 July 2013.

Smoking bans force people to stop smoking, instead of letting them be honest with themselves and learn to stop through self control. Bayer explains how smoking bans can be useful, but there should not be bans everywhere as open spaces such as beaches or parks would not be harmful to other people due to the smoke not being enclosed. He does state how smoking is bad, and a bad influence for younger generations, but people should want to stop out of their own will, not because they are forced to. This article was intended for the general public and experts on the topic. It is good information to read for the general audience, but it lets the experts know that they should stop establishing so many smoking bans in every space around them. This article however, is lacking rhetoric appeal. It was written poorly, making it uninteresting to the reader, and it was not very persuasive either. This source complicates the topic even more as it brought about thoughts that most people may not have thought about otherwise. One weakness about this article is that it is quite outdated, so all the information may not be entirely accurate. It does however, address both sides of the argument which is helpful. The author has written the article to be very relevant to smoking, but it is not very effecting in persuading the reader.

Viewpoints, link.gale.com/apps/doc/EJ3010170438/OVIC?u=cobb90289&sid=bookmark-OVIC&xid=e743b07c.

Wood, Daniel B. "Smoking Bans Help Reduce Tobacco Addiction." Addiction, edited by Christina Fisanick, Greenhaven Press, 2009. Opposing Viewpoints. Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints, link.gale.com/apps/doc/EJ3010103282/OVIC?u=cobb90289&sid=bookmark-OVIC&xid=d573010d. Accessed 6 Mar. 2024. Originally published as "New No-Smoking Frontier: Condos and Apartments," Christian Science Monitor, 2007.

Smoking bans are beneficial to the public by preventing extra work from being done to clean up smoke, and preventing unnecessary injuries from occurring. Wood explains how smoking in public areas such as hotels and apartments make it difficult for workers there, as it is hard to let someone else rent out the room when it smells like smoke. It is also dangerous is assisted living facilities, as senior citizens have been injured due to fires from cigarettes' not being thrown away properly. Smoking bans would be useful to prevent any of these things from happening. This article was intended for the general audience, to inform them that smoking is harmful to the people around them, and for experts so that they can establish more no smoking signs around public areas. Wood does a good job of making the article interesting with data from other people's experiences, and this source helps clarify the topic, by encouraging more no smoking signs and providing examples as to why they would be useful. The author however, does not address the counterargument, making his claim a little bit weaker. This article was very relevant and useful to the topic because it was interesting to read, and provided helpful information.
