Montag the main character is a fireman and he burns books and starts fires instead of putting out fires. He picks up books before he burns the rest of them, and having a job with access to books is what helped him start to read and realize books aren't bad. Also as a fireman he is reffered to as a salamander which is what represents the lizard. Really they weren't living, they were just alive. Their world seemed happy and peaceful because they were so distracted from the real world. Society became like a hologram, see through, fake, and seemingly untouchable. Montag mentions how how as he held the gun up to Beatty he saw no fear in his eyes. He was staring into the eyes of a man who had no problem with dying right there. Beatty had nothing left to live for due to the fact that everyone is numb on the inside. He had nobody to love because he had forgotten was love really felt like. The only feeling left was anger. Anger for being alone, angry at Montag for disobeying, angry for only feeling angry. He had been told for so long what to feel he forgot how to feel and that's why he didn't care.
