When mexico won its independence from Spain in the 1900's the Mexican government made the day of the dead a official holiday. Jose Guadalupe Posada was the creator of the skulls and decorations. He wouldn't just use them for the day of the dead, he would also use them for many other reasons like to make fun of politicians. These drawing were very popular at times and were also used to express anger and injustices. The importence of the day of the dead is that it's a way for Mexicans and/or Mexican- Americans to celebrate that their passed relatives have gone to a better place.
