"Hello! My name is Karsten Gabriel Cabico, a second-year CCIS student passionate about exploring and celebrating Philippine pop culture. Growing up, I've been drawn to different aspects of our culture, from vibrant festivals that showcase Filipino traditions to the flavors of our famous street food. OPM (Original Pilipino Music) is another favorite, as it captures the soul of our people through music. Fashion trends rooted in our heritage, like the modernized barong or unique Filipino streetwear, are inspiring to me as well. Additionally, as a photography enthusiast, I find joy in capturing these cultural moments, preserving the beauty and essence of Filipino identity through my lens."

For my featured Philippine pop culture, I chose P-pop, with a focus on the popular group SB19. P-pop, short for Philippine Pop, has been making waves in recent years, as Filipino groups adopt global music styles while highlighting distinctly Filipino elements. SB19 stands out not only for their catchy music but also for their dedication to representing the Philippines on the international stage. Their songs often reflect Filipino values and stories, making them relatable to fans nationwide. P-pop resonates with me because it shows how Filipinos can bring their unique voice to global music while staying true to our roots. Watching P-pop groups like SB19 succeed fills me with pride and optimism for our entertainment industry.

P-pop, and particularly the rise of SB19, can be analyzed through Semiotics, which studies how symbols convey meaning. In SB19's music videos and performances, they incorporate Filipino cultural symbols and themes, such as resilience, unity, and pride. These elements are visible in the way they dress, their choice of words in song lyrics, and even the cultural stories they choose to tell in their videos. For example, their outfits often mix modern styles with Filipino motifs, and their lyrics include themes that reflect the Filipino experience. This symbolic layering creates a strong sense of identity among Filipino fans, particularly the youth, who feel a renewed pride in their culture. Through these symbols, P-pop communicates the message that Filipino culture is both unique and relevant on the global stage.

Applying the Agenda Setting Theory, we can see that P-pop’s prominence in media is changing public conversations about local talent and creativity. Media coverage of SB19 and other P-pop acts emphasizes the quality and potential of Filipino music, encouraging audiences to value and support local talent. This shift not only boosts the careers of local artists but also influences young Filipinos to aspire toward creative professions, challenging the traditional mindset that success can only come from certain fields. By gaining more visibility, P-pop sets an agenda that encourages cultural pride and underscores the importance of Filipino creativity, helping to redefine how Filipinos see themselves in the global entertainment industry.
