Book Review From Booklist

Grades 9-12 Debut novelist Sharpe attempts a delicate balancing act between past and present in this murder mystery about secrets and truth. The story begins with the crime, which is then unraveled by our narrator, Sophie, as she describes how she got to the point where her best friend, Mina, was murdered. Sophie alternates between telling her current story and relating past events, starting with the car accident three years before, which ravaged her physically and led to an OxyContin addiction . It will not take the reader long to realize that Sophie and Mina were not only best friends but in love with each other; Sophie’s heartbreak is as much about this as it is about Mina’s death. Despite Sophie’s eagerness to find the killer, the hunt for him feels a bit abandoned as past events are continually revisited and analyzed. Fortunately, Sharpe’s writing is beautiful and her characters are fully realized, which should carry readers through to the book’s sorrowful finale. -- Dean, Kara (Reviewed 05-01-2014) (Booklist, vol 110, number 17, p53)

I completely agree with Kara Dean when she explains the past and present in the chapters of the book. The mystery is pointed out through the flip flopping of time. As many could say, time is a huge deal with murders and heart break. Sharpe definitely expresses the hurt within Sophie's heart strongly. The reader can feel the same way as if they are Sophie and the story is their reality. A part of the book where light could have shined upon in this review is Mina''s death scene. The descriptions of their own thoughts and words really set the mood for the reader. The detail of time and place are very thought out. As well as every character in the book when they are described. Also, the love triangle between Mina, her brother Trev, and Sophie. The love between Mina and Sophie is also shared with Trev. The truth couldn't be explained very well by them but it was a tretcherous break in all of their hearts.

The Christmas lights are a symbol of Mina. During the book Mina has always been the leader in their friendship. When Mina passed away, Sophie felt lost without her best friend to help her walk with her bad leg, make good decisions, etc. At the end of the book when Sophie is moving on, she puts these lights on Mina's grave. She states "And I know that someday, when I'm ready to come home, they'll light my way" (Sharpe 341). When Sophie is ready to come back to her home town without Mina by her side, she will have her thought. The thought of having Mina by her side through everything in the rest of Sophies life, will help guide her. Therefore, the lights will guide the way home with support.

The very details of the blood going through a jean jacket, and the fear explained in their faces really explains what its like to be there when someone dies. The thoughts said from both of them gives you the sight of death and how Sophie must look like after she experienced this. You really can see what is happening to Mina when she is shot. The life come from her eyes, and the blood rushing out.

Another literary element is the style of this book. The style is explained from flip flopping of past and present with the chapters. When Sophie is trying to find Mina's killer, she is overwhelmed with past memories of Mina and her. This is really showed through the chapters from the past. The style really lets the reader understand Sophies thought with the explanation of time.
