Overall, students can be categorized by the amount of vocabulary words. Students who do not continually learn vocabulary are the students who fall behind in school.
Tier 2 words can be described as academic words. They span the curriculum and need to be specifically taught. One of the main reasons students fall behind in vocabulary is when teachers assume that the students know the Tier 2 words.
Tier 3 words are content specific. They are used in specialized subjects and will need to be thoroughly taught.
