The number of tourists has increased notably in the past 5 years, by about 220%. In the harbour of Orkney the port calls of cruise ships coming in have grown from about 60 to 120.
Tourism is a lucrative activity; the 90,000 visitors spend 30 million pounds by year on the island.
The growth of tourism in Orkney can be explained by a better tourism management, the UNESCO label and the development of infrastructures.
The tourist profile has changed, with the arrival of industrial tourism and cruise liners. Several issues have arised on the Orkney sites: erosion, big groups, crass behaviour, pollution, etc.

Tourism in Orkney will continue to rise. It can be an advantage for Orkney's economy provided it remains sustainable. Indeed, the increase in tourist numbers deteriorates the neolithic sites. That's why the Orkneys have to find a tourism manager.

The Orkney islands neolithic sites are well-known for the direct experience they provide to the visitors. For example, in Stonehenge, people cannot touch the stones or climb on them. In Orkney Ring, it is possible. This personal experience might be kept, but in the same time, sites have to be protected from the visitors' impact, which causes footfall and erosion. Some particular techniques have to be used, such as draining parts of lands or protecting others.

For a few years, Orkney has become a center for renewable energy with installations that use wind power or marine energy. This new industry has had a positive impact on the islands
With the increase of cruise traffic visitors, cruise companies take these preoccupations seriously. Indeed, cruise ships use low sulphur marine gas oil to limit air and marine pollution.
