Self-care is a concept that is overlooked by many individuals who are constantly working and have families to tend to. As educators especially, I think many of us struggle with this. I often times don’t even think about myself or time that I can set aside because I simply feel there is never enough time in my day. I have quickly come to realize with experience and from the articles that self-care is a must. How can we be up for the challenge of lifting others whom we counsel or our families if we are running on low batteries? It’s very difficult to find time but I need to make more of a conscious effort to take care of me and do things that make me happy. As counselors, we give advice in hopes of bettering student’s lives and at times it can take a toll. As a teacher, I find myself as busy as ever and I’m all about my student’s successes and making sure they feel praised when they have done a job well done. I am caring and nurturing them without caring for myself. I want to make more of an effort to spend time with my children and my husband. I want to be able to disconnect and unplug from the deadlines and expectations of work when I am off the clock. My goal is to focus more on my family and spending quality time with my husband for self-care. We also need a person to trust and confide in when situations and times are difficult in this field. It may seem strange to many of us to think of ourselves from time to time, but it is definitely necessary.

-Monica Trevino
