Before electric power people used water, wind, oil, and other methods to provide the energy needed to power their teams and provide it light. Before the creation of the electric power plant, the only way to produce electricity was by chemical reaction or by using battery cells, and the only particle used was for the telegraph.

During the process of the light bulb, Edison knew he needed to use a filament with a high resistance. The reason and to do with both economics and the nature of electricity. Edison was also thinking about more than his light bulb; he also contemplated a system that would distribute electricity to people.

Dec. 1880- Following the invention of the light bulb, Thomas Edison established the Edison Electric Illuminating Company of New York, now Consolidated Edison. This company would provide electrical power as well as lightbulbs to customers.

On September 4, 1882, Edison’s direct current (dc) generating station at 257 Pearl Street, began supplying electricity to customers in a one-quarter square mile area. This installation was the forerunner of all central electric generating stations that would soon power the country.

The First District included much of the downtown business district in Manhattan, the financial capital of the United States as well as most major newspapers. Edison formed the Edison Electric Illuminating Company of New York, a direct predecessor of the present Consolidated Edison Company of New York (Con Edison) in December 1880 to undertake the project.
