Walking around town, I noticed something different this morning. There wasn’t the usual sound of children’s laughter, in-fact, all I heard were whispers. I kept my head low as I walked through the over-crowded market, listening to the unusual whispers as I passed by. Upon arriving home, I met with my stepmother, questioning all I had heard. That’s when she told me. A horrific story of the 9 dwarfs and their scandalous doings. I couldn’t believe the suffering they had caused to this village. The village that seems so peaceful, was once a place of misfortune and grief. No one had ever told me about its awful past and I was determined to bring justice to my friends, my home…

It was 37 years ago, in the year 1914. 9 Dwarfs appeared at the town gate, they were bleeding and bruised. It was in our nature to accept everyone and help whoever we could. We gave them a place to stay, provided them with all the necessary things to ensure a quick recovery for them. Despite everything we did, they caused nothing but pain and torment. They took the lives of many innocent citizens. It happened twelve nights after they had first arrived, just as they were getting back in shape. 7 of the dwarfs snuck out of their stone hut, quiet as mice. No one was awake that night, or so they thought, but there was one person that witnessed the entire *thing..* and that person was no other than your mother. She was only 10 at the time, yet she witnessed something truly traumatizing. She was hiding in the shadows of the dark alleys, meanwhile the dwarfs were sneaking around with various weapons. They went from house to house, taking innocent lives, muffling their pleading screams for help; but it was no use, by the time their screams were heard, at least half the village was dead. We chased them, desperate for our lives but it was no use, we just couldn’t stop them. That’s when they did something truly immoral before exiting the city, they concluded their rampage by setting alight the hut that was given to them out of kindness. Unfortunately, the 2 other dwarfs didn’t make it, leaving only 7.

I felt sick to my stomach, how could such beings do something so inhumane? What was their motive? I had a million questions floating through my mind, but there was one thing I knew for sure. I wanted revenge. I wanted to ruin their lives, just as they had ruined ours. I would devise a plan, something unpredictable. I couldn’t confront them straight away, that just wouldn’t work, I needed… a strategy. I stayed up late, thinking through various possibilities, searching for the one that would succeed.

It was only when I woke up that the perfect plan came to me. I would draw up a map of the surrounding areas and send out spies to pinpoint the Dwarfs location. After receiving this information, I will navigate my way to their cottage and play the role of their harmless maid who had run away in an attempt to escape her evil stepmother that wishes to assassinate her. Meanwhile, I will use my pocket mirror to contact my stepmother, transmitting messages that she will receive from her magic mirror. I can’t tell my stepmother the location of their cottage until I need her, it’s too risky. Who knows what her goal is. When the time is right, I will announce my whereabouts and instruct her to disguise herself as a nice young lady, bringing along a pie containing a mild poison, one that’s only effect is to make the dwarfs lose consciousness. What would I do next? That’s something I would decide later. This plan… it was flawless! I would make my first move tonight.

I sent out my spies around midnight and paid them to keep their mouths shut??

After a few days, it was finally time to set out on my journey. I knew exactly where the Dwarfs were, all I had to do was get them to trust me. When I arrived, I knocked at their door, waiting patiently for an answer. The door opened and I was greeted by a small man with a white beard and glasses. I introduced myself, sounding as innocent as I could manage. He totally bought it! When I was inside, the 7 Dwarfs gathered around me and listened as I told my believable story. I told them I would be their maid, in return for a place to stay. They carelessly obliged, providing me with the reassurance I needed to go ahead with my plan. I was unsure if these were the same Dwarfs, they seemed awfully respectful. Perhaps they’ve changed.

A month has passed since I started working for the Dwarfs, and I think its finally time to execute the plan. The Dwarfs had just left the house, to go work so I pulled my mirror out of my pocket and flipped it open. I explained to my stepmother where the cottage was located and what it was she must do.

Her hands tightly clutched the armrest as the plane took off. Being out of control felt foreign to her. Despite this, she needed a desperate break away from reality. Work had drained the warmth out of her spirit, and she believed a remote vacation could restore it.

In an attempt to engage herself with the long duration of the flight, she looked out of the plane window. The rising sun splashed the clouds with endless rays of orange and red, suffusing the sky with glorious light. Some days, she admired the sky. Even when the world is drowning in misery and hardship, the sky always remains beautiful; untouched by anguish. However, she illustrated quite the opposite. Her thoughts were continuously tormented by upcoming work. The never-ending phone calls and the endless scheduling of meetings had permanently exhausted her soul. There were no signs of contentment or ecstasy left in her, and she desperately wished she could be like the sky. The remainder of the sunrise abandoned subtle blues and pinks merged in a haze, while rays of warm light beamed through the plane window. She felt an unfamiliar warmth as the rays of light invited itself into her soul. Straining thoughts of hers evaporated like the fading pinks of the sky. With a refreshing feeling of serenity, she closed her eyelids and fell asleep to the soft hum of the plane’s engines.

The furious click-clacking of a distant keyboard made her stir. Reluctantly, she opened her eyes, and the streaks of light pouring through the window greeted her. By shielding her face, she noticed the passenger beside her deeply absorbed into an email that they were typing. This sight evoked bitter memories of her work life. She was conscious of the fact that after this vacation, she would open her laptop to an abundance of emails. Stress rapidly spread across her mind, like ink on wet paper. To her, stress was like water in a bucket. Her clients and employees would constantly throw requests and inquiries into the bucket to the point where the water overflows. It should make sense to her to put a lid on that bucket, but somehow, she could not comprehend what a lid was. To distract her thoughts, she gazed out of the plane window once more. The ocean rose and fell with rhythmic calmness, prompting her to breathe. From the movements of the ocean, she could almost hear the metronomic music of the crashing waves. The waves shattered the sun-bathed skylight into a mosaic of reflected colours. She craved to dive into the depths of the ocean to experience something work could not grant her; exhilaration. A sensation of personal clarity masked by the draining office hours would be revealed to her by the coolness and the transparency of the water embracing her body. Slumbering waves of the early morning would gently slam over her, their curling fingers sweeping over her with a tender stroke, giving her comfort and support. She yearned to immerse herself into the water to uncover a sense of lightness - an escape from stress. Salted water would be tasted on her lips, exposing her to a thrilling tang, rescuing her out of her dullness.

Breathing in a lungful of earthy cologne, she stepped out of the plane. For a change, the squawking of seagulls filled her ears instead of ticking office clocks. Under the warmth of the sun, and surrounded by nature, she thought that maybe serenity was not challenging to find after all.

The other day I woke up at around 8:15 as well and had decided that today was the day, I was to finish my CTY Writing Assignments. I came downstairs first and had Korean Noodles for breakfast. I did not want to eat them since they were leftovers from a previous night of a Korean Thanksgiving Feast. But since I promised to eat what I did not finish the previous night I was obligated to this task. The instant I went onto my computer upstairs I checked my messaging software and behold my friend who I had not played a video game within a month was asking if I could play. Here I was thinking whether to play with my friend or finish my CTY Writing Assignments and do it later. I ended up playing video games then and thereby giving up my mom and our “The Office” watching later tonight.

Her hands tightly cl

Walking around town, I no
Walking around town, I noticed something different this morning.

Sunsets. Little spots of Colour meld with the array that the sun displays as it disappears over the horizon. Deep Oranges and Yellows of happiness and content surround people’s heads like halos, like an infection spreading from the star itself to the people of Ketterdam. The sudden beauty catches me off guard, leaving me stuck there in a trance for who knows how long, although the sun is lower than it was before. I shake myself out of it, shrug the fishnet back onto my shoulder, it must’ve slipped at some point, and carry on down the main road.

Leaning the net up against the wall, I enter the small hut I share with my Uncle. He’s exactly where he always is at this time, the centre of the room, cross-legged and cloaked in Heavy Blues and Purples of concentration. Even though I know it’s pointless, I bounce across the room as quietly as I can, landing on the places I know don’t squeak after years of attempting to sneak out at night. Uncle Aboiye must have the best hearing in the village. Though I suppose after living without hearing a single word spoken for about three times longer than I have, you would have good hearing. I look over my shoulder to see, unsurprisingly, his face staring back at mine, a small little smile on his face. I can see the Blues and Purples fading out as he eyes me up and down, only to spike into a sharp Magenta of questioning, noticing my obvious lack of fish. I wince and shrug, I don’t usually come back empty handed but the fish weren’t biting. My Colour must be going all kinds of sorry because he quickly waves it away and flashes me a warm smile. Even though I know he’s putting it on for me, the signature Aboiye smile instantly puts me at ease. Saying he has a disarming personality would be an understatement. Shuffling over, he hugs my shoulders quickly before shooing me towards my room. He picks at my work shirt, wrinkling his nose which I can’t help but grin at. He’s right though, I can’t meet with Jaylin looking like this. Or smelling like this for that matter. I give my shirt a sniff. Oh yeah, definitely not smelling like this.

This is where they told me to meet them, right? I peer around at the dingy alley, both sides packed with crates covered in stain from years of toting around fish pushed up against the sides of the shacks this alley is nestled between. It isn’t the most romantic spot I have to admit, but there isn’t many places in Ketterdam where you can evade the permeating smell of seafood. Besides, on a night like tonight, all the nice places would be filled to the brim with people meeting up with friends, family members… lovers. I feel a tap on my shoulder, delicate. I spin around, almost jabbing Jaylin in the side in the process, instead hitting the satchel slung over their shoulder. I really must have been in my own world if I couldn’t even hear their footsteps. I hope they weren’t standing there for too long. The heat in my face must have spread up into my Colour because they take my hand and lead me out of the alley, shaking their head and laughing silently. Jaylin suddenly stops in front of me, keeping a hold of my hand, not that I want them to let go. They turn around, slowly, taking hold of both of my hands as they lean down into me. I’m submerged in their Colour, my vision like a murky pool reflected through a kaleidoscope. I’m sure mine is just as colourful.

It doesn’t take long to reach the ocean on the other side of the village. People are streaming onto the beach in clumps, blankets bunched up on shoulders and oil lanterns held tight. It’s dark out now, and it’ll be even darker by the time we’re back. I glance at Jaylin and they motion to the satchel. Good. We’re set. I start off towards the inky water, lapping quietly against the beach, and head towards my boat. The tide was reaching its peak as I came in this afternoon, with the water scarily close to its hull now, anymore and it probably would have floated away. Good timing. I feel sorry for the people who parked up higher on the beach, I hope no one misses the main event. I give the boat a shove and it slips into the water, Jaylin climbs in first, sliding to the front of the boat to make room for me. I clamber in after them, planting myself down on the plank stretching the width of the boat and reach for the oars on either side of me.

It isn’t long before the hills to the side of us fall away. By now it’s so dark you can’t tell where the sky starts and the ocean ends. I pause, and let go of the oars. It’s deathly quiet apart from the gentle slapping of the ocean on the boat, and both Jaylin and I’s breathing. It’s peaceful. Real peaceful. I don’t know how long we stay like that but when I ease back into reality Jaylin’s shifted so we’re side by side on the same plank. It’s not cramped like it should be. I can almost feel my eyelids sagging when a flash of light falls through the night sky and shimmers out before it touches the water. More start appearing, all falling from the same general area diagonally towards the earth. Comets. I lean to the side until my head’s resting on Jaylin’s shoulder, and I think I could stay that way forever. Our Colours blend together and hang around our heads, embracing us. With streaks of light falling through the sky in front of me, and the warmth of a body and its breath next to me I slip out of this world,

Happy.

By the time that activist and writer Elaine Brown was the Chairman of the Black Panther Party, the Party transformed Brown into a galvanizing leader. Her memoir A Taste of Power led readers through her life journey from an ordinary person to Party leadership. In their book Groundwork, historians Jeanne Theoharis and Komozi Woodard explained that the popular narrative of the Black Panther Party (BPP) was a narrative that centered the formation and operation of Black power organizations around the spontaneous visionary acts of their charismatic male leaders, but the life of Elaine Brown altered that narrative. By refining the narrative to include her experience, the Black Panther Party is understood as a unique organization that still fell within the legacy of other Black freedom movements; it depended on the radical daily work of ordinary and local people, specifically women such as Elaine Brown.
Brown’s introduction to the ideals of the Black Panther Party through her personal experiences and beliefs decentralized the importance of male leaders. Brown’s then neighbor, Beverlee Bruce, inadvertently introduced Brown to grassroots organizing against oppression when she encouraged Brown to teach piano lessons to young girls in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. It was during Brown’s first trip to Watts that she confronted the harsh reality that her childhood home was nearly identical to the Watts housing project that she was visiting. She also saw a younger version of herself in those girls. Because of this stark realization, Brown felt an obligation to better the world for young girls like her beyond piano lessons. Brown’s encounter with the girls in Watts demonstrates that she felt a moral obligation to ending oppression for girls who grew up like her before she was a formal member of BPP. Brown’s epiphany demonstrated that it did not require the visionary leadership of BPP male leaders for Brown to commit to the ideals of the Party. This acknowledges the commitment of non-male non-leaders in the Black freedom struggles in California and elsewhere.
Similarly, crediting the successes of BPP to visionary male leadership undermined the importance of essential tasks carried out by ordinary members like Elaine. Brown’s first position in a grassroots organization was on the staff of Harambee, the newspaper of The Black Congress. The Black Congress was a coalition made up of nearly all local Black organizations including the BPP. As a staff member, Brown used her free nights and weekends away from her UCLA desk job to piece together the newspaper. In addition to her newspaper duties, Brown also answered phones, cleaned offices, and did “whatever else was necessary.”
Her proximity to the BPP through The Congress eventually led to her invitation to join BPP. During her time as a general member, she kept her day job, lived communally with other members, completed her required readings, and even carried out missions including detonating Molotov cocktails at specified locations. Living, cleaning, and answering calls for the sake of the Party were all essential tasks for the growth and development of the organization. Before her rise to power, Brown helped maintain the functioning of the Party. This work was revolutionary and militant because it did the essential job of keeping the Party organized and active. Reducing the Party to male leadership diminished the revolutionary work that people like Brown contributed to the functioning of the Party. Furthermore, Brown’s necessary work redefined militancy.
This work and life of Elaine Brown placed the Party amongst a long line of Black freedom movements. This legacy of local people as the foundation of organizations is not unique to the Black Panther Party. Historians Jeanne Theoharis and Komozi Woodard explained in their book Groundwork that those the oversimplification of revolutionary groups to their leaders led to the creation of artificial distinctions such as civil rights versus Black power.
The work of local people is one way to see continuity between distinct movements. Theoharis and Woodard concurred when they stated that, “local people did the daily work that made the struggle possible.” Even though different movements addressed different local issues, essential work like Brown’s was imperative for organizations nationwide. Moreover, Brown’s introduction to the Black Panther Party as newspaper staff for Black Congress demonstrated that collective grassroots work was necessary for all organizations in the coalition from BPP to the Watts Summer Festival Commission.
Elaine Brown’s life also showcased this continuity between movements on a symbolic level. Brown explained that she understood the Party as a part of a larger Black freedom legacy when described the Party as “a link in the chain in the history of Black freedom struggles.” Furthermore, during her tenure in the Party, Brown also witnessed continuity on a symbolic level when H. Rap Brown and Stokely Carmichael joined Party leadership. This transition illustrated a symbolic continuity of the movements that Brown witnessed. The Party’s grassroots coalition membership and the induction of former SNCC members into Party leadership was a testament to the continuity of the movement based on the groundbreaking work of local, ordinary people. Deemphasizing male leaders uncovered the meaningful role of women in militant originations. As Elaine Brown’s life demonstrates, their work was imperative to the functioning of the Party and redefined radical activism outside of maleness.
It is important to note that Elaine Brown was not representative of the Black Panther Party. She faced discrimination, sexism, and endured fellow Party members as they asserted their belief that Black militancy was inherently masculine. It is also important to note that the Black Panther Party saw themselves as distinct from other Black freedom organizations. But her life and existence in the Party served as an important reminder that women and other ordinary members played an integral role in the Party that was revolutionary. This essay highlights members outside of charismatic male leadership like Elaine Brown allows for greater understanding of the Party as a distinct movement that had its roots in the legacy of similarly Black freedom struggles.
Ironically, Elaine Brown’s position as a former leader of the Black Panther Party was what allowed academics to examine her life. That examination demonstrated that her personal commitment brought her to the Party, her ordinary work kept the Party alive, and the same ordinary work was in line with the tradition of Black freedom struggles. To honor Brown’s work before and during her time as Party Chairman is to give proper credit and the title of revolutionary to all worked in the name of freedom.

The cold, lifeless rain poured heavily as the sky churns into a dark shade of ash, as the shadows come to life, and as the blistering heat slowly creeps upon my heart. The pale crescent moon shines like a silvery claw in the night sky and the bitter wind whistles and moans from all directions, quivering the thick white blanket on the branches of the pine trees near the sidewalk. I inhaled sharply and stood motionless, completely gripped with fear. The kind of fear when your conscience alarms you of the unheard, joyless footsteps crawling closer to your front door. “Who’s there?” Silence.I sigh, blaming myself for these stupid imaginations until a soft knock is heard. My hair stands on one end, an icy shiver races down my spine and a lump comes to my throat. It is 11:30 pm. I fight my way through the terrors and make my way towards the sound but my hands get heavier as I slowly open the front door. A little boy about the age of five standstills alone at my doorstep. He has brilliant blue eyes like a tempestuous ocean, the kind with a sense of darkness within which is too unsettling to call ‘innocent’. Uneven scars that seem like stitches cover his red lips while his eyes are dreadfully still with no movement, locking stares into mine. His black shirt and jeans hang off his skeletal frame and his snowflake skin matches his personality - devoid of any emotion. “Can you please help me? I lost my way and got separated from my mother”, he asks with a rasping tone of short pauses between his words. “Come in first, darling. It’s very late and with this weather, you could get sick”, I reply, resisting my outgrowing fear as a feeling of agitation creeps upon me like something is holding me back, giving me a warning. The air grows hotter and damper and a wave of darkness blots out the world, encircling my house in murky black. Immense dust hurtles to my face like bats streaking for their prey; the front door slams shut as the street lights flicker vigorously and the dog howls pierce through the still of the night. Suddenly, something seizes my neck with an extraordinarily prodigious force that was too powerful to call human. Its frigid palms pressing against my throat; I can feel my esophagus closing. Through the corner of my eyes, I notice a grotesque creature with a villainous grin of satisfaction but not a five-year-old boy who I saw earlier. Cracks appear on his face like fissures through the desert and the scars on his lips turn into needles poking out of every angle. The color of raging hellfire conquers his blue eyes as his fingers slowly stretch longer into ginormous gold keys. His small black t-shirt transforms into a pitch-black cape that covers his entire eight feet tall body of sickly greenish-white, like the color of tree sap.“The daughter of Hermes”, the creature whispers as its deep voice echoes in my ear and my skin tingles coolly. The name hangs in the still air like an impending storm. “I don’t know anything you are talking about! Please let me go! Please!”“This will teach your father a lesson that nobody takes what’s mine!”, the creature bellows and blasts out a loud mirthful laugh, revealing its blazer, sharp fangs about three inches long.“Please, please let me go… I have nothing to do with what you are saying---” “The worst kind of death is dying for something you didn’t do, Hazel Grace.” The grin becomes a snarl, baring teeth like a wolf, and it drifts closer as its devilish eyes fix mine. Its index finger gradually moves closer to my heart that pounds intensely in fear. In a flash second, it is inside, twisting and turning like a key unlocking a door. I open my mouth to scream for help but nothing comes out. My heart, once banging from inside, is now slowing in tempo as pure, vermilion blood spurts down my body and floods the glacial floor. “Be afraid Hazel Grace. Be very afraid of death”, the creature mumbles, smirking in arrogant triumph as it vanishes into a sable mist through the hazy gray air. My vision blurs out and the last thing I hear is the reminder of midnight from my watch as sore, burning tears rush down my cheek, and as I gasp for my final breath.Abruptly, my eyes snap open, and cold, frigid sweats drip down my shaking body that paralyzes in panic as I glance at my watch. 12:02 am. The creature’s voice repeats in my ears like an overplayed song and the visions haunt my mind. I grab my chest – expecting a heart to be thumping quickly, impatiently, yet there’s nothing there, not even a beat.

It all started on October sixteenth, two thousand and three. Hajani Nathaniel Stephenson was born, living in Montego Bay, Jamaica, at the beginning of my life, was an experience that I'm very fond of. In a way that shaped the person, I am today, even though I haven’t stayed for half my life. But my younger self never came into touch with a major transition. My mother came home from work and told me we had to travel to Colombia for a business opportunity she had to take. I was frozen with fear that this was a huge change I didn't even know that Colombia was, I was excited but mostly afraid.

I had to learn a new language, and I was up to the task. At the end of the day, the time had come to travel to Colombia, while I was sitting in the chair, all the anxiety had come back with the idea of moving to a new place that I didn't know about, the idea of having to make new friends, and start a new life. My stomach turned around. What seemed like a lifetime we landed welcome to San Andrés, the pilot said I looked out the window to the place I was going to live for however long, San Andrés Colombia, a small island in the northwest of Colombia.

We got to the location where we were going to live an apartment complex with a pool in the back, a corner store right next door full of snacks and drinks that I've never seen in my life before you knew I got enrolled in school. It was a struggle for me because I was working in Spanish and at this point, I didn't learn Spanish, but it wasn't all that bad some people at school were bilingual, and that made it easy for me to catch up on Spanish. On Saturdays, my mother and I went to church where at least most people spoke Spanish and English, and I'm going to say that I met one of my best friends, Jana Rose, and her family, during the time I've been living in Colombia, we're getting closer. During the time we grew closer, my Spanish grew stronger. Please look at your verb

But unfortunately, all that came to an end, I had to move back to Jamaica, and right after that, I went to Florida to visit my cousin for a summer break, all of a sudden, right in the middle of my summer break, my mother called and said that I was staying in America, and she was also coming to stay with my cousin for a while, and my mother met my stepfather and we got a house together. A couple of years ago and a random day, my mother told me I had to go to your new home and stay with my dad she never told me why, but I had to go, she said it was best for me, and I went to New York and stayed there for a year and a half, and I came back to Florida and found out that my mother and stepfather had problems and had a divorce, and I've been living in Florida ever since.

With that being said, I've been considering a lot about change and I've learned that life isn't going to stay the same all the time. Life will be subject to transition. And you have to adapt to the challenges of life.

Justin Beck

Frau Graham

AP English

20 October 2020

Mindful Preservation

Every event or mishap in your life affects your thoughts and feelings. Everybody experiences them, both positive and negative, but how you deal with the outcome differs from person to person. Different coping mechanisms are better for different people and situations. In many common situations, one might talk with one’s friends or just anyone that they may be close to. While being very easy to fake the truth, some receive a lot of help from this. In most cases, it is more self-preserving to lie about how you feel rather than tell the truth. Even though the latter can be more beneficial, it isn’t always the easiest option when struck with a bump in the road. No matter how somebody deals with troubles, everyone deserves to feel happy and content.

It seems that every school year we are told that mental health matters above all; it also seems that they only talk about it once a year like it’s seasonal. In my opinion, bad mental health is always there, it doesn’t come around once a year like the Easter Bunny. For me, the “Easter Bunny” arrived and has stayed with me for years. There have been countless times where I have been checked upon by my friends. In every case, I have lied about how I was feeling at that time. Of course, there was the occasional, “I’m not doing well at all, but I’m existing.” When I have lied to my therapeutic friends, I have been able to avoid putting a burden on others. Talking with other people has made me come to the realization that what is going on in my head is actually happening; whether I want to believe the swirling storm of dread is a different story. However, when I do lie to my friends about it, it gets brushed off and I don’t have to think about it anymore, which helps a lot, sometimes. Like everything, there are downsides to this way of “therapy”. While helping myself in that instant, nothing got better for my mental health. It just got shoved down deeper, which has made it harder to come forward and accept it.

Even though there are countless times when someone has asked me how I am feeling and I lie, sometimes I feel the need to break down and say, “no” and cry. Sometimes, it just gets so bad that I can’t contain it anymore and I spill everything out in hopes to feel empty. There was one time when I was driving home with my mom and I decided to tell her that I want to see a therapist. To which she replied, “Well, let’s just wait a few weeks and see how you’re feeling then.” The first time that I caved and explained how I felt, I was shot down. All I wanted to do was go home and be alone in my room and let my thoughts consume me. Whenever I think of moments in my life that went wrong or times that have shaped who I am today, I immediately am brought back to that experience. Even though I didn’t receive any support or help from her, it still felt nice to finally get something off of my chest. However, the instantaneous relief from my mental pain did not do anything for me, at least anything that would last. I felt more hurt from this experience because I lost trust in my mom, especially since she so willingly sought help for both of my brothers the exact moment they came up to her and asked. Since I have experienced this, it has been hard for me to talk to others because I always begin to doubt whether it is a “phase” or not.

No matter how hard it can be, it is always beneficial to ask for help. But sometimes, when there is no time, it is easier to lie. When someone lies, the conversation can be over instantly, while still able to carry on for a few more thoughts, it normally ends pretty quickly. If you spend a lot of your time talking to someone about yourself, it takes time away from the other person that they can spend with themself. Especially today when everybody’s schedules are so tight, there is no room for slacking off or muddling around doing nothing. It can be extremely difficult to have a meaningful conversation during such a short period. Convenience can be such a great factor in everything we do and experience. Every single bit of technology improves and becomes more convenient for everyone to use, likewise, so shall no technological things.

Just because something is convenient, doesn’t mean that it is advantageous. It can be extremely difficult to approach anyone and ask to use some of their time. It can even be difficult to explain it to yourself; everyone needs time to come to terms with themselves, especially if it is negative. It took me a few months to tell someone that I didn’t feel right with myself since it started. It took even longer to tell my mother that I wasn’t ok with myself. To truly understand and benefit from help from others, you need to be able to feel comfortable with accepting that it is a part of you. It can be easier to tell different people, I have a few friends that feel the same way. Since it is easier for them to understand it, they have provided me with some feedback that I believe has bettered my condition. However, it could also get put off as something normal if I tell them which doesn’t help at all. No matter what, everybody deserves to be able to get into a better headspace regardless of how horrible you feel.

Horrible mental health is damaging and horrible, but everybody should feel comfortable to ask for help. Sometimes, it can be easier to fake how you are feeling to help yourself. It is very important to be able to get the kind of help that you need. Even though everyone deserves to feel content, it is very hard to ask for help, which is why some people lie about it. Lying can give you a way out of talking to other people and make you feel like what you feel isn’t happening. On the other hand, talking can give you real results and help you get out of the divot that you are in mentally. Everybody deals with some sort of bad mental health at some point in their life; receiving help from others should not be hard nor unavailable.

                           Game Over
Jasleen Nguyen
Period 1
Mr. Davis
No, I am not going to start my story with a “Once Upon a time…” that is too cliché. I am here to talk about friends that don’t work the way you want them to and dropping them like a sack of potatoes… did I say a sack of potatoes, I mean breaking your friendship with them. Yes, I have had to deal with multiple friendships that did not go the way I wanted them to go, and maybe you have too, so here is my story.
“Yah Felix, are you crazy?” I say annoyed from across the gray-foldable lunch table.
“Not that I know of,” he answers strolling up to the lunch table.
“When can you two idiots take a break and quit fighting? Geez, when can we ever have a normal lunch period.” Joshua retorts,
“I didn’t start it, the blond hair Aussie over there started it.”
“At least I’m not short”
“Yah you two, SHUT UP”
It is not like you get to see 3 Asians fighting in English while one of them has an Australian accent…right? Oh, wait, you probably do not know who we are, I am Vivian Kang. Felix Lee and I were best friends since we were 3 and we soon later met Joshua Park when we were 6. Now we are seventeen and a senior in high school. Felix is from Sydney, Australia, while Joshua and I are from LA, California.
“Please, I want to live 20 with hearing” Joshua pleads unamused.
"Wait, hold up, weren’t you yelling at us to shut up like 3 seconds ago?" I questioned,
“Wah the hypocrisy here is burning”
The annoying loud lunch bell rang, and we rush off to our next class, which thankfully was not physics, but P.E. The coach was droning on and on about the correct form to running,"...our running form can help you run-"
"Eric, please send Vivian, Joshua, and Felix to my office," the principal said, calling over the intercom.
“Yah, what did you two dum-dums do this time” I whisper loudly just enough for the three of us to hear in the office. “You think I did something stupid? Oh, forget it, I’m the most sensible one out of the three of us,” Joshua replied, “How can I do something stupid? I have the two of you monitoring me 24/7 just in case I don’t set anything on fire,” Felix explained. The principal soon walked out of his office, saying, “Since you guys are the most responsible students in your grade, I hope you can show our new addition to the class of 2018, the ways around our school.”
“Wait, hold up. You think we are- “
“Sure, we can make sure to show them around the school the best we can,” I say cutting off Felix.
The new senior was named Evelyn and she was very bubbly and happy. "Hi! I'm Evelyn."
"I'm Vivian. Nice to have another senior."
During our trip around the school and I thought she seemed like she would be a great friend. We decided to hang out after school to get to know her a bit better. That soon led her into being our best friend. But a week later, I started noticing her acting a bit strange. She was still treating the teachers and guys in our school kindly like she was the purest and nicest person in the world, while she started acting snarky and rude like the wicked witch of the west to the girls. I thought it was normal but I could not shake off the feeling that something was off, so I talked to Felix during chemistry. “Hey, do you notice that Evelyn has been acting differently,” I asked
“Nope, why?”
“I don’t know, it just seems like she’s acting nice around guys but rude to the girls”
“Nah, you’re overthinking things again”
Evelyn must have known that I was doubting her, so she started to bully me mentally, did it influence me? Yes, but I knew what she was doing, so I did not change myself. I was sitting in philosophy when she turned around and asked,
“Oh, Vivian! Where did you get that hoodie?”
“Uh…Felix gave it to me?” I awkwardly laughed.
“But I think you should start wearing pretty clothes, and that hoodie would look so much better on me” she retorted
“Uh y-yea” I stuttered
Three months have passed, and I am on my breaking point. A week ago, I was able to realize that she was trying to separate me from Felix and Joshua because I was getting in the way of her “plans”. I eventually discussed with the guys, and they thought that I was imagining things and I needed to get some help.
“Oh come on Vi, I thought you were better than this” Joshua said disappointed.
“How could such an Angel beHowscribed as some horrific” Felix explained “I knew that you thought something was off but I didn’t think it would go on for this long”
“Wow, did you guys not listen to what I’ve been saying for the last half hour” I retorted, “Of course you guys wouldn’t understand, she treats you differently, and I’m not going to lie, Joshua, I thought you would have caught on that she was trying to ruin our friendship.”
Our conversation soon changed into a harsh fight. Because of that, we did not talk until April rolled around.
“Hah, it must hurt knowing that your friends don’t believe you, oops I mean your former best friends” Evelyn snickered
“It must be nice ruining friendships and then bullying the one that is left out, right?” I smirked, after a moment I continued, “I wonder what bullies think about when they bully other people and what do they achieve by bullying. Is it popularity? Power? Or perhaps a friendship that they were never able to have so they took it away from somebody” I questioned tilting my head.
She laughed, then answered, “You're right. I was wanted your friendship, and to get that friendship, I had to kick you out and make everyone hate you. It was pretty easy, considering you guys had a fight and stopped talking.”
“Good luck with your ‘plan’, I think you’ll need it,” I said turning around.
After the conversation I had with Evelyn, I found Joshua and Felix in the library and decided to show them something.
, I need to show you guys something. Can we talk by the bleachers?”
“If you need to show us something then hurry up and just show it,” Joshua answered annoyed.
“Fine, I will,” I said passing them my phone, “Listen very carefully.”

“Hah it must hurt knowing that your friends don’t believe you, oops I mean your former best friends”
“It must be nice ruining friendships and then bullying the one that is left out, right? I wonder what bullies think about when they bully other people and what do they achieve by bullying..."

It seemed like time had stopped for them, sitting there in shock, they spoke up, “We’re sorry we should have believed you”. I quickly accepted their apology and we quickly planned on how we were going to confront her about her “plan”.
We put a confession letter in her locker and told her to meet us in the gym, and right when we had our free period, she showed up in the gym, so I connect my phone to the speaker and played the recording. The look on her face when Felix and Joshua walked in was priceless. “Uh…” I laughed, “You can stop acting now, princess”
“Stop trying to frame me!” She yelled, trying her best to make fake tears slide down like a waterfall.
“Oh, cut the crap,” Felix said, “We all know your intentions, you can stop now.”
“You will get what you deserve Vivian, I will never forgive you for getting in my way of getting friends.”
“You don’t get friends by breaking up the friendship and then taking the people you want, you make friends by yourself, and kind to others.” I sighed “It’s Game Over Evelyn, I hope you can find friends by being yourself and genuinely kind to others.”

In the setting of Verona, the loveable Shakespeare classic takes place. Two lovers who loved to quickly stumbled along the way and ended their love story in death. These events unfold with a common knowledge it ends tragically. Romeo and Juliet is a tragic romance playwright that has broken hearts for centuries. The deaths of these two lovers can be blamed on a million different sources though when looking closely at the text and annotating it correctly it is clear to see that there is a definite cause. Romeo and Juliet may have made foolish decisions; however, what influences these are the feuding families who doom the love at the start, and because of this, the idea of secrecy is adopted by the adults ultimately creating a tragedy.
Wanting something that is forbidden to have; a centuries-old ideology originating from the biblical story of Adam and Eve. The central idea around this is the more one cannot have something the more one wants it. The gain of the forbidden object or person most commonly come with punishment shortly after. In the play, the families of Romeo and Juliet are and have been feuding for as long as time. Because of this, the two “should not be together” based on social guidelines. Though they should not see each other, they do. This could be due to love at first sight, but it could be the feud that brought them together. “My only love sprung from my only hate,/ Too early seen unknown, and known too late!/ Prodigious birth of love is it to me/ That I must love a loathed enemy” (I, v, 152-155). This, spoken by Juliet, shows how Romeo is her love and she knew this from the first glance. She is distraught because loving someone she is supposed to hate is so forbidden to her. The idea of love winning over hate, or battling it, is commonly thought of when linking the two. To contradict this, Lois Kerschen writes, “Could Juliet's love spring from hate because they are both intense Passions? A 19th-century German scholar, Hermann Ulrici, said that the love of Romeo and Juliet had an ideal beauty but was condemned from the beginning because of its overpowering and Reckless passion that disturbs the internal harmony of the moral powers.” Because of the feud, there is built up hate to the point that turns to love. Also vice versa, so much love built up that they felt they had to hate the situation of not being together. Love and hate coincide. Romeo and Juliet are just adolescents, and not knowing how to handles these intense emotions, they go to great extents- ending in tragedy. If there were to be no feud between families, the couple would not have had to deal with these intense feelings.
Because of this feud between houses, there is a cloak of secrecy covering Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. The fear of family and disapproval keeps the relationship private. This leaves them to deal with the strong emotions of love by themselves. Juliet knows her family will disapprove of her relationship, so she finds no other fit way to deal with this than to be dead. She comes to this conclusion after she was told that she was to marry Paris. She specifically says, “If, rather than to marry County Paris, Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself”(IV, i, 75). Here Juliet has confided in the Friar for help. If the relationship had been accepted by the family and had been openly spoken about, she may not have had come to this conclusion. The Friar here, instead of taking the morally right path and speaking to the parents about Romeo and Juliet’s relationship, he took matters into his own hands. He adopts a secretive nature and decides to sneak the marriage and help Juliet fake her death. He went behind the backs of the parents and broke the trust of Juliets mother-figure, the nurse. If the Friar had not felt the need to keep the relationship a secret or work with the

At the sight of it, my throat went dry and my chest tightened. My heart was racing as I stood frozen in fear: iced limbs layered in the freezer.
I wish I had never discovered that book.
…
It was late in the evening. I knew that since the sky was a vivid crimson colour: my wife’s favourite. There was a sale at the book store, so she had sent me to buy her a cookbook: How to prepare sashimi.
I stopped by the store, and as I walked along an aisle of books, a strong attraction drew my eyes to a book that noticeably stood out from others despite its minimal design: black cover and an eccentric title in white: Your life, with no illustrations or author name. Intrigued by it, I decided to purchase the book along with my wife’s cookbook.
“Why would you want a sashimi cookbook?” asked the employee.
“Excuse me?”
“I mean, this town far from the sea, and fish is rarely imported here, so you must be rich if you can afford it.”
He was right. Seafood was a luxury here since barely anyone could afford it. The question aroused my curiosity, but it soon faded as I left the store. On the way back home in my cab, I took a look at the novel. It wasn’t long, so in 30 minutes, I'd reached halfway. The chapter was about a character called Paul, who was being chased by a lunatic woman hunting for human flesh. There had been several disappearances in the town, but no one seemed to have noticed; Paul would soon to be added to that list.
The car stopped suddenly, and I saw my wife standing there by the door. Her hazel eyes dazzled as I pulled out her book.
“Thank you so much!” she cried as her hands brushed through the pages.
“It’s nothing, but why would you want this book?”
“Oh, mother sent us some salmon, and I wanted to make something for you!” she responded.
We walked into the house. Maria went to the kitchen and returned with a slice of warm, tender meat with the fresh smell of pepper for dinner.
“Does it taste good?”
“Incredible.”
The rest of the weekend was serene, nothing like the chaos of the next day in the office as I overheard conversations among the other employees.
“Has anyone seen Paul?”
“No, he was fine last Friday. He’s usually early for work isn’t he?”
I tried to continue with my work, while the colleagues’ conversation kept coming back to me, urging my hands to search for the book, I started reading from where I left some days ago. "Upon the dim light of the bloody basement, her hazel eyes glimmered with a gun on her hand towards Jake.”
Stunned at the coincidences, I calmed myself:
“It was just a book”.
While on my way back home from work. I visited Paul’s house but there was nobody, unopened mails from Saturday laid at his door. An ominous feeling growled in my stomach. The book came back to my attention with its vague description. Aware that this wasn’t simply a coincidence, I returned home. The house was quiet, Maria must have been outside, so I helped myself a glass of milk in the kitchen, suddenly a trail of blood leading to the basement door caught my attention. It was strange since the basement had never been left open before. Driven by curiosity, I peeked into the basement to see a half-opened chest freezer with raw meat wrapped in paper, next to was a table with large knives and butchery tools. A person was there, she looked up with surprise in her eyes as I quickly realised her hazel eyes under the dim light. She quickly grabbed my arm with force, eyes sharp as of a predator.
“You are home early, Jake! Don’t worry, this is just pork for our dinner.” Maria explained in a rushed tone, unlike her usual calm voice.
My doubts grew larger after witnessing a completely unfamiliar side of Maria. It was like I had never known her at all. After our dinner, I went straight to bed, struggling to fall asleep as an invisible force drawn my mind back to the basement. Observing my sleeping wife, I left the room and sneaked into the basement, lifting the freezer door to meet a frightful sight of Paul’s head, hidden under something that under close inspection, are human limbs. I trembled, almost fell on my knees when the basement light flickered. Maria looked at me with a gun in her hand.
“Sorry dear, I was saving you for the last but I guess you’ve known too much.”

As we both began to feel more relaxed, we were able to dive into more topics and subjects that related to the both of us. For example, we talked about how the pandemic has affected our college experience. Alyssa is a first year student that goes to a private university with a semester system. As a student who attends a public university with a quarter system, it was insightful to learn more about her perspective on classes and workload. Another topic that we discussed was our addition to the social media application “Tiktok”. We agree that last year was one of the hardest years and coped with it through “Tiktok”. We talked about some of the trends and content we love to explore as an escape from COVID-19. I learned that Alyssa is an avid coffee and sweets lover, so a lot of the content she finds enjoyable are cooking videos. She informed me that she found joy when watching comedy skits from different influencers.

Over the recent decades, system stability has been a virtual branch of modern control theory due to its great importance to intelligent and automotive control. With the development of science and technology, the nth-order system stability has been increasingly applied because of its wide application and high reliability. Many scholars turned their attention to the research of algorithms for system stability. However, it was a complicated problem to get the outstanding control property since the mathematical model of nth-order systems is nonlinear, underactuated, and multivariable. Adaptive and robust control algorithms have gained more and more interest from scholars. Many of these are used in the stability analysis of the nonlinear systems, such as sliding mode control method (SMC) , adaptive control method , backstepping control method (BC) Results have been obtained only for the first-, and second-order systems because, in practice, it is more complicated to design controllers for third-, or even nth-order systems, especially those with random external disturbances. Nowadays, scholars pay comprehensive attention to the design of controllers for the nth-order complex systems, and various control algorithms have been proposed simultaneously. Recently, the backstepping control method, widely applied to design the controllers for complex systems, has attracted increasing attention. This method splits complex nth-order systems into several subsystems and provides virtual control for each of them. Also, a proper Lyapunov function has been constructed to guarantee system stability. Nevertheless, the backstepping method has the “explosion of complexity” caused by the virtual control derivative. Many approaches have been presented to solve this problem, such as sliding mode control, fuzzy logic system, and dynamic surface control. In [1], the sliding mode approach for nonlinear systems has been suggested, even if this algorithm is known to have a “chattering problem”. In [2], the scholars used fuzzy logic systems to approximate the unknown part of the system, and a fuzzy MIMO switched observer to estimate its unmeasurable part. The dynamic surface control method has been applied to overcome the problem that their approach is not suitable for systems with extra disturbances. Qiu et al. designed an adaptive neural dynamic surface controller for the linear system. The dynamic surface control algorithm was proposed for an anti-skid braking system, integrated missile guidance, and an autopilot system. Nevertheless, the above literature did not consider the problem of the nth-order nonlinear system. Furthermore, the mathematical model has many unknown parameters for the nonlinear system in practical applications. The neural network algorithm has been widely applied to approximate these. In [3], the researchers combined RBF neural networks with adaptive control law to design the controller for the nonlinear system's unknown functions. To the best of our knowledge, no backstepping and adaptive RBF neural networks are based on the dynamic surface controller for the uncertain nonlinear nth-order system under unknown parameters and extra disturbances.

Offred's
narration of her life before and after the coup in Margaret Atwood's The
Handmaid's Tale includes her analysis of her experiences as well as the
differing societies normal behaviors and values. Offred's careful analysis of
her two contrasting roles in life exposes the abundance of censorship in
everyday citizens lives. Through Offred's narration of her past and present,
Atwood reveals that often in society, the present majority opinion, not fact, dictates truth.

Offred's detailed account of her
life before the Sons of Jacob took over the United States reveals how often a
widely accepted opinion disguises itself as truth. For example, when Offred
thinks back to her old life, she recalls that she used to "think of [her] body
as an instrument or an implement for the accomplishment of [her] will." Before
the coup, society encouraged selfishness. Because the message of
individualism occupied every American's mind,
everyone eventually believed individual freedom was a fundamental truth of who one was.
Also, when Offred's mind wanders to a conversation with her mother, she
remembers her mother's passionate comments on the uselessness of men. In the
years before the theocratic dictatorship, feminism and protesting for social
change was popular. Because Offred's mother was a strong believer in feminism
when mainstream society encouraged it, she believed those ideals as truth.
Third, as Offred unsteadily recalls her reasoning behind loving magazines, she
emphasizes the lure of transformations and immortality. Magazines represented,
in the republican United States, what one strived for. As there were so many
magazines, seeking immortality was widely accepted as
the normal standards of society. Finally, as Offred misses Luke, she emphasizes
that she misses being valued most of all. The Republic of Gilead only values
women for populating the country. However, in the former United States, gender
equality flourished, especially in Offred's account. Through Offred's
recollection of her former life, she reveals how society shapes one's own
belief system.

Second, through Offred's analysis of
her new life, she emphasizes how monumental society often is in shaping opinions
into truths. During the Thanksgiving service, Offred highlights that although
some girls will remember the time before the war, some will always be "in
groups of white, in groups of girls" and "silent." By stating that some will
never know a society before Gilead, Offred emphasizes how strong their belief
in Gilead will be. By never having outside opinions, the newer generations will
only know truth through the filter of the theocracy. Also, when Offred
remembers listening to the news, she reveals that she believes the news
reporter is lying, as Gilead only reports victories. Because totalitarian
states only report what they want, they have full power over what citizens
believe and see. By having that total control, especially in media, the
Republic of Gilead has control over the truth. Third, when the first Ofglen
disappears, the government instantly replaces her. By
being instantly replaced in name and in dress, the republic of Gilead reveals
how the state wants women perceived. Because the Republic wants women
seen as population machines, the government strips them of everything that makes them
unique. Finally, from Offred's experience, the Republic requires that, when
trying to conceive, the commander, the wife and the handmaid be present in the
room. By regulating how conception occurs, Gilead strips away variation
and replaces it with guidelines. The act of conception, in the Republic of
Gilead, is definite and unchanging which lends itself to rules in a book. By
being forced to live under a totalitarian government, Offred's analysis of her
experiences reveals that socially accepted opinion conceals itself as truth.

Atwood's view of the subjectivity of
the truth is truthful and relevant. Perhaps if Offred blindly followed the
rules, the novel would not have revealed the truth about humanity. Or maybe if she had, the novel would have
been too close to human nature. In any event, The Handmaid's Tale
emphasizes the importance of civil liberties.

Traveling is a hobby which many people now enjoy. It is a hobby which is becoming more and more popular as opportunities for travel become greater. These days there are several ways to travel around the world.

Backpacking is quite different from staying in hotels regarding its costs and safety. To begin with, backpacking has been popular for many years with young people who do not have a lot of money to spend on traveling. By backpacking people can save a lot of money and see many more places than if they spent the same money staying in hotels. Furthermore, as backpackers will need to sleep in hostel or outside in a tent, and there is an issue of safety and security because they will sleep in the same area as other people, many of whom they don't know.

Staying in hotels, on the other hand, differs from backpacking in terms of cost and safety. Unlike backpacking, staying in hotels requires a lot of money. Hotels are one of the most comfortable ways of traveling, but only if you have enough money. By staying at a hotel people will spend much more money than they would spend in a hostel. In addition, a hotel provides a higher level of security to the traveler.

I sit beside Gatsby silently, his face wearing a shamefaced expression. There was nothing more to do or say. For a moment, I hated him. Not for what he had done but for how he made me feel what he felt. Gatsby’s charm conveyed emotion into people, it was his gift and he used it without knowing sometimes. This time was one of those occurrences, and the feeling was heavy and throbbing. Even though I had nothing to do with the crime, I still felt guilty and I despised Gatsby for it subconsciously. I knew it wasn’t his fault either, but his gift became a curse at that. And this double-edged sword was one not even Gatsby could afford, but he paid the price and so did Daisy.
I looked up in desperate attempts to distract myself. The sky was especially bright tonight, illuminating our pale green faces. The stars speckled the night sky like wet paint on canvas, forming constellations and pictures. I could make out almost all of them until the sky lit up and a quick light ran across the atmosphere, disrupting the glow of the other stars. A shiver ran down my spine as I thought of Myrtle. The feeling came back, and I became quite angry with Gatsby again. My guilty conscience propelled my body to sit up, and without thinking, I walked onto the Buchannan’s porch, just outside the open kitchen window. Gatsby, who was still emptily staring into the horizon, ignored me.
“I don’t get it. I don’t get how you could even consider him over me! That bastard!” Tom’s powerful voice boomed through the kitchen, followed by a loud thud of his fist on the table that made the foundation shake slightly. I crouched below the open window and peaked my head upwards so I could see the commotion entirely.
The kitchen was rustic and dark, in the middle of the tiled room was a counter with a small table behind it. On top of the table was a dead and droopy bouquet of roses placed inside a crystal vase. Daisy sat at the counter, expressionless and still in shock from the events prior. Daisy drew her breath in and opened her mouth to talk. Tom stood angrily, crossing his arms and staring at Daisy, waiting for her explanation.
“It happened so long ago...We were so young. He came back in my life and-and it confused me! I’m sorry Tom, but I married you and I love you….” Her voice broke off into a whisper. I wanted to feel sorry for Daisy, but deep down I knew there was a price to be paid for killing Myrtle. Deep down I knew Daisy was only sorry she got caught.
“You disgust me, your sins disgust me! Jay Gatsby is a lying fraud who commits crimes for a living, Daisy! You gave yourself to him like a Hussy.” Tom paced around the room, pointing his finger at daisy.“And what about Myrtle! What about your infidelity and lies! Jay didn’t lie or cheat, he is a proper gentleman and he tr-”
Tom grabs Daisy’s neck, her eyes widen in panic but she does not fight back. “He lied to you Daisy, and he tore us apart! That’s all he does. Everything I said is true and you know it. As for Myrtle, she’s gone now. I can’t control my desires as a man, but for you, there is no excuse! You were unfaithful in this marriage and you’re going to help me fix it.” His face began to redden from the yelling and his eyes bulged out of his head. He was beyond irate.
Tears streamed down Daisy’s face. She sits limply at the kitchen counter with her head resting in her hands. “I don’t know what to do, Tom. I’m sorry! I want to move on from this together. But it’s all over now that I killed Myrtle! I’m going to jail forever.” She starts sobbing.
“You’re lucky to have me! Every mistake you make, I go around fixing. I know how to fix this mess you started.” Tom yelled as Daisy sobbed.
“H-how?” Daisy sniffled.
“You don’t need to worry about that. The situation will be taken care of. Once this is over, we’re moving and starting over somewhere else.” Says Tom, conspiring his plans for Gatsby.
Daisy looked down and shivered. “It’s cold in here Tom, would you close the window?” She asked sheepishly.
I gathered myself and walked back to where Gatsby was sitting, to find that he was gone. With my head hanging low, I walked home in the darkness of the night, unable to see my own shadow. I thought about Daisy, Tom, Gatsby, and Myrtle. I began to feel sick again, and for the first time in a while, I cried.

I have lived in London for two years now. I moved there from Pittsburgh Ohio for my studies. I study at the London School of Economics. Before London, I had lived in France for three months. It was my first year away from home, so I missed my parents all the time. They visited me once for a weekend. We were talking to each other about everything for two days, non-stop. After I graduate I plan to move to Japan, so I have been learning Japanese for the past six monts. I will miss London for sure.

Beyond land’s sight, I lie in an injured row boat. If not for it’s royal mahogany craft, it would be a glorified piece of driftwood. My stiff, sun-dried hair is tangled across my pasty face. Its unbrushed strands blend with a blanket, cushioning my head, it’s woven surface tattered, yet reassuring. Pristine ripples gently prod my boat, making the planks creak, only for the desolate ocean to mute them. As I hoist myself from the boat’s hard floor, I peer over the edge. All I need to do is lean to one side, or the other, and my suffering will end. But that is a truth I will never invest in.

A lot of nights I lay in bed and look at the peeling, water-damaged ceiling, thinking about how fucking sad this town is. Lakewood High is in the middle of nowhere. Everyone knows everyone. The people all fake their happiness. Most of the adults that live here are the ones that peaked in high school. That’s my opinion at least. Maybe they're happy and satisfied. Maybe this is the life they wanted as they grew older. It’s certainly not what I want. Maybe having money is enough for them to be “happy”. These people all live in residential developments. Off the main road that extends all the way through town are all the different communities. Some nicer than others, but they’re all the same to me. The houses all look identical: big and tan with huge, unnaturally green lawns. From the outside, they’re clean and happy looking. The roads that go through the communities are all freshly paved and some still smell of new asphalt. The roads are just loops. You’ll always end up back on the main road since there’s nowhere else to go. The people will throw little parties with all the parents in the neighborhoods, they are all best friends from high school of course. Their kids will all grow up together and form a tight-knit circle. In their early years, they ride their bikes around the quiet, protected streets. As they get older they start stealing their parent’s alcohol to go get drunk in one of their basements. Then they all start having sex with each other, some get married and then the cycle starts again.

The kids are what some people would call the “cool kids”. I don’t know if today’s generation even uses that phrase anymore. This town, or whatever you would call it, is made up of people who peaked in high school. That’s my opinion at least, as an outsider. There are two parts of this town. The residential developments are at one end, my house is at the other, and the high school is right in the middle. My house is pretty normal in my opinion, not huge but not small. Chain link fencing separates my yard from my neighbors on either side. The yard has patches of grass, some daffodils that bloom once a year, and a sad old rose bush that has grown uncontrollably since my mom abandoned the garden. On the inside it’s cluttered: books, shoes, random papers, empty food containers, clothes, and bottles are everywhere. It smells like whatever food is being made at the moment. My friends call it “homey” and “cute”. I don’t know if that’s an insult or a compliment.

For fun, the high schoolers go to gas stations to hang out. Every week it’s the same. After Friday Night Lights people pack cars into the lot of the Wawa that’s right down the street from the stadium. The lot is loud, music blaring from cars. It smells like weed. Some people dress up in short shirts and short shorts and draw the school colors on their faces, along with their boyfriend’s jersey number. The younger kids wait outside in the parking lot waiting to see an older kid that will go in and buy them Juul pods and Mike’s Hard Lemonade. Occasionally, the chosen few will retreat to one of their friend’s basements to finish off the night. Everyone else stays until the cars begin to pull out of the parking lot and drive into the distance. Eventually, the gas station empties. As cars leave the lot gets quieter and quieter, lonelier and lonelier. You begin to notice things like the flickering lights on the Wawa sign that no one cares to change. As well as the strange old man that sits outside the door every single night. The night gets quiet, and everyone goes to bed, knowing that next week will be exactly the same.

Today was hard. It’s gotten better though. I walked into school with my earbuds in, like I do every morning. The halls were completely empty when I arrived. Ten minutes ago the hallway would be booming with voices of a hundred loud teenagers crammed into a single hallway, now I just hear muffled voices as I pass by each of the classrooms and my own echoing footsteps as I walk. Ever since halfway through freshman year I’ve felt like everyone is looking at me as I walk through the halls. It’s easier to walk down the halls when they’re empty rather than full. I went to all my classes, sat in the back, and prayed that my teachers wouldn’t call on me. I don’t want to give anyone a reason to look my way, so I don’t raise a hand when the teacher asks a question I know the answer to. I wore what I wear every day, a big t-shirt and sweatpants.
