Today, in my first class, we read some of the main policies the Ministry of Education of Trinidad and Tobago has issued. I think that the Ministry of Education Draft ICT Policy, in general, is updated and subscribes to international standards. It embraces the new technologically advanced generation entering our schools today. In our present economy with worldwide recession and the national purse being tightly budgeted I do agree that students be allowed to bring their own devices to the classroom. The advantages are:1. students use devices in which they are comfortable with2. students use the devices that is affordable to them (and their parents/guardians)3. less competition for the availability of school computers/laptops4. the guarantee that students have access to a device at any point during a lesson. The disadvantages are: 1. the increased possibility of thefts of devices. 2. jealousy and competition among students for the most advanced/updated device. I would not mind using a smartphone in class as long as it is to showcase students' work, play tunes to enhance the lesson. However, I will never use it to record a lesson or take pics of myself or other classmates.

Today's class was very enlightening. I was able to create a small test using Google Forms. What was awesome about it is that I can create a test, view it in my email, send it to my students to complete and correct it without leaving my laptop. I did not have to neither print copies nor distribute anything to my students. Amazingly both student and I do not have to meet to discuss the results since we both get immediate results on problem areas via online.
The use of electronic assessment can make both teacher and student apprehensive initially especially when both participants are accustomed to the pen and paper method. However, electronic assessment has its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages:
1. many websites available to assist the teacher in creating a test.
2. faster analysis data on test results
3. eco-friendly (using less paper for large number of students especially when an entire Form level is assessed)
4. students can access assignments directly from the teacher at any time and
5. direct submission of assignments
Disadvantages:
1. less human contact. Some students/teachers prefer one-on-one face discussions
2. constructing e-tests can be daunting if the teacher has difficulty is editing or previewing from one website especially if certain features are not available.
3. lack of internet connection from one's home or other locations may pose a problem in accessing e-tests.
4. minor confusion may happen if various teachers in one school have individual sites to do their e-tests. The students would have to record which site is for whose assignment.
Generally, I do believe that e-testing is a great method to utilise in the technology era as long as teachers are supported and assisted in creating e-tests that are valid and reliable.

Today's class was enlightening as to the possibility of teaching using a different format. I knew about PowerPoint presentation and used it. However, I did learn new techniques that would work nicely in my subject area such as How to download a video and audio recording directly to my slides. The use of PowerPoint Presentation to deliver a lesson can grasp a student's interest and maintain his focus to the task assigned. The teacher is no longer the centre of attention. Rather, this format of curriculum delivery is more student centered and highly appeals to the visual/auditory learner as well. I can foresee more student participation whereby a student may become part of the lesson and is given the opportunity to discuss topics in the classroom. However, didactic instruction is still relevant especially to manage and organize information given. Didactic learning must not be eliminated since classroom management is still a priority and the teacher must maintain class control and direct the class to meet the objective of the lesson. The teacher can utilise both concepts of teaching to ensure order and optimum learning to take place. In the future, when using technology I can engage the students by the use of videos and music in the teaching of modern languages. I can encourage the students to research their own music or videos pertaining to the topics on the curriculum at that point in time, thereby, reducing the amount of output on my part. The students can share their findings, thus, allowing both my class and I to learn new information. They would become more active learners rather than the didactic passive learners. They would not have to depend on my experience, rather they can collaborate and learn from each other.

In my area of Modern Languages ICT can be incorporated by using PowerPoint Presentations, video and audio clips from YouTube and blogs to document students’ progress. I perceive that ICT can enhance the learning experience and encourage both teacher and student to explore and learn from each other and as well as open the doors to students being self-taught.

I believe there is merit in using ICT for substitution and augmentation. For substitution, it is good practice to allow the student to become more technology literate and comfortable. As the student becomes more confident through practice he/she can start the process of using the features offered to enhance their learning such as correction and insertion of accents and inverted punctuation in documents.

I can see myself using ICT more meaningfully in the future by incorporating videos and audios in classes and encouraging students to create their own videos to share with their peers. I can become a more reflective practitioner by using blogs to record my experiences and share with fellow practitioners in my school and worldwide. Additionally, I can also gain knowledge from what others may share from their classrooms. I can see myself encouraging my students to be more creative and learn outside the classroom setting and use their devices to its maximum potential to amplify their enjoyment of learning a foreign language and sharing their findings online.

Share your perceptions on the session with particular reference to the needs of learners with special needs? How can you, your school make a greater effort to assist such students?

Today’s session was extremely informative with regards to the various learning styles of my students. I was reminded that my students learn differently from each other. I am aware that in a class there exist multiple intelligences among the students and that learning styles vary from student to student. As a teacher I am entrusted with the responsibility to reach out to the various learning styles from a single lesson in a one given class. To ensure that my lesson delivery is effective I realise that my lesson must incorporate various activities/techniques that reaches the various learning styles from the students, thereby, achieving the objective of the lesson in a more effective manner.

With respect to learners of special needs today’s session greatly helped me to design lessons that involves ICT. The use of ICT today helped me to reach out to students with differentiated learning styles, as well as students who are visually and aurally impaired. By using devices such as the laptop I was able to activate the Narrator and Speech Recognition for the hearing impaired. Additionally, I was able to use the Magnifier which can assist the visually impaired. What I learned to do today:

Mind mapping/concept mapping using https://bubbl.us

Games building using https://kahoot.com. This game building tool can appeal to the kinaesthetic learner.

I believe I can assist students with special needs by using ICT as a tool in the classroom. I can allow them to listen to the Foreign Language on their devices. They can listen to the Spanish texts being read out loud to them for the reading comprehension activity. They can use voice recognition to give their answers from speech to text. Schools can assist such students by allowing these students to be assessed through technology. If schools can recognise these forms of assessments as valid and reliable then learners with special needs can feel included in the educational experience and progress along with their classmates. Eventually, we can all echo the sentiment of the Ministry of Education of Trinidad and Tobago: “Education for all”.

Discuss the challenges posed to teachers by the use of Web 2.0 tools for collaboration and project based learning.

In this session, I learnt some Web 2.0 tools. I learned how to create a podcast and a web cloud. I learnt how to create a website on SharePoint to upload my podcasts and my Web Clouds. It was fun and very interesting. However, I did receive some challenges which I can foresee happening in the future with other teachers, as well as myself.

Podcast challenge: Lack of knowledge in knowing how to navigate and use the tools on the devices can be a challenge to teachers. Through practice and some coaching this activity was overcome. However, for teachers who are attempting this alone, as is always the case, it can be confusing on how to edit and store correctly the recordings. Additionally, a major challenge was devices not equipped with microphones to do recordings.

Collaborative spaces/ Weebly and SharePoint Challenges: These spaces are very lucrative for students who would like to upload and share their ideas and creations online for public viewing. Teachers can monitor group work, project submissions and students' comments. However, there may be challenges with privacy. Teachers may not always be able to edit the content posted by students for groups to view, thus, decreasing the teacher's authority in an online classroom. Additionally, the online group submissions may make it harder for teachers to closely monitor individual student input. There is a lack of direct teacher-student connectivity, as well as personal interaction. Personal intervention and immediate correction are not present on a group space. Internet connectivity must be present and all persons in the group with the teacher must be online together to achieve this relation.

Give your thoughts on the ICT Teacher Professional Development Programme, sharing the areas you felt were most significant in helping you to use technology in your teaching and learning strategies.

Today I learnt how to use OneNote Notebook. I can see that this can be used to manage classes, content, quizzes and other items. What is like most about this is the personal feedback a teacher can give to a student in a private setting.

Generally, I think that the ICT Teacher Professional Development Programme is a good strategy to assist teachers to be more technologically competent in the classrooms. As a teacher it was eye-opening to my lack of use and knowledge to the many websites and tools in my subject area. I leant how the use of Office tools and the incorporation of ICT in lessons in a more engaging student-oriented manner and to deliver lessons more effectively can be achieved.

I felt that the most significant areas in my teaching and learning strategies are:

1. SAMR model (Day 4)

2. Kahoot! Quiz/game (Day 5)

The SAMR model greatly helped me to move beyond memorization and substitution level in my classes. I can see that students need to be more engaged and involved in their own education. They need to tap into their higher order thinking skills. The Kahoot! Game/quiz was a fantastic fun and learning method to get the students involved in education. It is also wonderful to have the students use their own devices to do the activity.
