- Is said to have been created by Shiva (the destroyer), one of the 3 main gods in Indian mythology.
- This dance form is separated to three types: Nritta, Nritya, Nataya
Nritta: A more technical performance 
Nritya: dancer communicates a story (spiritual themes and messages)
Nataya: Usually preformed by a group, but sometimes by a solo dancer who maintains certain movements. 
- Costumes are very intricate.
- Music is usually preformed by a vocalist who does the whole performance. Instruments are used as well.

- Spectacular costuming and staging.
- They have historical plays (jidaimono) and domestic plays (sewamono). 
- A Kabuki program usually presents them in that order, separated by 1 or 2 dance plays showing ghosts, courtesans, and other exotic creatures.

- Very expressive
- Mimicry and eye-movements.(The eye-movement is only found in Balinese dancing)
- Dancing rhythm is kept with the beating of the gamelan. 
- In most dances leg position is usually low and open. 
- These dances are usually preformed at ceremonies, but sometimes part of dramas. 
- Most of the time these dances are passed onto young boys and girls at a young age.
