En 1989 los exportadores de café sumaron 1.424 millones de dólares y los del petróleo 1.415 millones. De 1984 a 1989 la participación de Ecopetrol en los ingresos totales del Gobierno pasa del 5.2 a 16.4%. 
Las cifras más significativas al recordar que el fondo del café, tradicionalmente gran aportante, subió en ese período de 3.2 a 7.5 por ciento (1).
La actividad petrolera en sus diferentes etapas ocasiona contaminación y cambios en el uso del suelo, remoción de materiales para la construcción de vías e instalaciones y pozos, contaminación de aguas superficiales y subterráneos, modificaciones bióticas sobre hábitats naturales, modificación de patrones socio-culturales y procesos inflacionarios propios de estos enclaves económicos. Como hechos positivos genera empleo, fortalece el fisco nacional, departamental y municipal a través de regalías y genera divisas al país.
