They would practice Kendo, “the way of the sword”. When practicing with weapons, they would typically use a sword, bow, or spear. When practicing against others they would use wooden weapons, but when practicing with wooden or straw dummies or even live slaves or prisoners they would use sharp weapons. However, when they weren’t practicing with weapons they would be taught about unarmed combat, such as the butjutso style. Sometime the students would be made to battle the elements by standing nude in deep snow or standing under an ice cold waterfall.

Code of Ethics:
The Bushido Code- 8 virtues of the Samurai

Rectitude or Justice

Courage

Benevolence or mercy

Politeness

Honesty and sincerity

Honor

Loyalty

Character and self control

Culture
Buddhism, Zen, Confucianism, and Shinto all made their mark on Bushido. Bushido’s unique philosophy valued honor, reckless bravery, and selflessness. Also, duty to the warrior’s master with the purpose of giving up one’s life and embracing death. The samurai were highly cultured and literate. Zen training allowed a samurai to become one with their sword and gave them a free mind which gave them a mental edge over their enemy. Zen practices like tea ceramonies, monochrome ink painting, rock gardens, and haikus flourished because of the samurai.

Based on everything I learned I think that if a knight and samurai were to fight, a samurai would win. I think that because, even though some of the knights weapons are a little better like the flail and maces, the samurai have long swords they are extremely skilled with. Also, the samurai have a better mind set rather than the knights because the samurai practice Zen and are encouraged to meditate which allows them to be more free where as the knights just fight. Lastly, the training of the samurai seems a lot more vigorous than the training that the knights go through. The samurai fight actual people and practice on slaves, they also have to stand outside in snow and and sometimes go without food or water.
