For example, when a student answers something incorrectly, I try things like "not quite" or "that's a reasonable idea, but here's where it went wrong", but sometimes it comes across as awkward or not genuine (like if I really don't understand where they're coming from, or if their answer is very far off). If they turned in a less than satisfactory assignment. I remember when I was in high school and turned in a bad assignment, my teacher asked to talk to me one-on-one. He told me that he knew I was smart and could do better. Then, he gave me VERY SPECIFIC feedback on the things I got wrong and lessons on the topics that I was unclear on.
