The United States covertly seeks to sell arms to Iran. The money from the sales was supposed to be in exchange for seven American hostages being held by Iranian-backed militants in Lebanon, but some of the money is used to fund militia groups known as the Contras, which were trying to overthrow the socialist regime in Nicaragua. The revelation of the administration’s plan, which went against a Congressionally approved law banning federal money from being given to the Contras, becomes the biggest scandal of the Reagan presidency. The scandal becomes known as the Iran-Contra affair.
