About 86 percent of mass public shootings took place in gun-free zones from 2009 to 2016.

I believe the leading cause of gun violence is the massive number of guns in the U.S. Our country has higher homicide rates with guns than other countries around the world, along with the largest amount of personal guns. The long term effect on the brain of violent games is still being researched and there is no solid evidence that lack of morals/religion in our society is a leading cause. Extremists are known for their gun violence and many mass shootings were committed by someone who was mentally ill, but the root of the problem is the number of guns that are accessible.
