         <title>1936 Olympics</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The 1936 Olympics took place in Berlin, Germany. During this time Adolf Hitler had just come to power. Prior to the the Treaty of Versailles had already been broken by Germany, however 49 countries still attended. African American athlete Jesse Owens won four medals in Track and Field events which was an embarrassment to Hitler&nbsp;who believed in a superior Aryan (white) race.</div>]]></description>

         <title>1922 Italian Government Overthrown</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In Italy, Benito Mussolini overthrew the government. The Italian government became a dictatorship based on a political philosophy called fascism. Like many other dictatorships Mussolini planned for large expansion throughout Europe. Italy was one of the two large Axis powers in Europe fighting alongside Nazi Germany throughout WWII.</div>]]></description>

After Stalingrad, the Soviet army stopped retreating and began to advance on Germany. The Soviet struggle on the Eastern front played a huge role in defeating Germany. In the course of the war, Soviet troops destroyed more German divisions than the British, Americans, and other Allied countries combined.</div>]]></description>

The explosion that followed killed about 70,000 people, most in mere moments. A stunned Japan did not surrender. Three days later, a second atomic bomb exploded over the city of Nagasaki, killing an estimated 40,000 people.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The most famous of the war crimes trials occurred in November 1945, when the Allies put 22 Nazi leaders on trial in Nuremberg, Germany. They were charged with war crimes as well as crimes against humanity, such as enslavement and extermination. Judges from the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and France heard their cases. Twelve defendants were condemned to death by hanging, seven were given prison terms, and three were acquitted in the Nuremberg Trials.</div>]]></description>
