The character Atticus is a man who lives his life with quiet dignity not allowing himself to sink to the level of others, who never sways from his beliefs. He is a very kind and patient father. Firm but fair, he wants his kids to respect him for who he is, not just because he is there father. He is an honest and ethical person, and he wants the same for his children.

Atticus represents the theme of true courage because of his courage to stand up for Tom Robinson even though others think lowly of him and because of his courage to do so even when it threatens his life.

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what" (Lee 115).

Atticus develops the theme through this quote because the quote tells how Atticus believes that having courage Is standing up for what you believe even if the odds are against you.

Try fighting with your head for a change” (Lee 176).

This shows the theme because Atticus is saying that it is more courageous to not give in to anger than to fight with your fists.
