I believe that stds need to feel connected to the teachers trhough something they may have in common, and the easiest way is through music, films, trips, work, current afffairs. When they find something in common, they feel more motivated.

I think my students and I have the interest in social networking in common. We also share the interest in watching series and some movies, as well as reading books and listening to some music. I think it´s important when students have this kind of identification with me, I feel more confortable and confident too. So when I give them some writing task it´s generally about things that we like, especially with teenagers, they get more involved and interested in doing things.

I guess series can be great motivators for students to write about. Almost all of them like series and ask them to write a review about their favorite one and to convince you (the teacher) to watch it is very interesting! They go crazy trying to make you feel into it!

Once I also work in the office when I'm not teaching, I think that what I have in common with my adult students the most is the necessity to communicate with foreigners at work. I spent 6 years as an executive assistant and I have a lot of experience using English at work. I think it helps me a lot recognizing student’s necessity at their workplace and adapting English to their needs. I also often focus on writing for certification and exams, this is something we also have in common because I intend to study and learn more every day to take more exams and I usually pass on all my knowledge and concerns about it.

I don’t have students yet, but I like to do anything that can help make conversations more interesting. For example: I like to take notes while I’m watching/reading something. It helps (and also stimulates) me to memorize new and cool expressions that, in my opinion, could be used in conversations.
Besides, I love to write about something I've just watched/listened/read because that's a way of sharing with people my view about the movie/song/book.
