How do our bones (and the muscles that make them move) work?

Activity 2! This is a video introducing bones role in our everyday life and also some animals who's bones look very different to ours. Bones are there for protection and support of the body since they are made of calcium so are strong and we have lots of them with various sizes and functions. Muscles are also mentioned as they are used to move bone so are very important.

Activity 4! Bonnie's great adventure is a story that's centres around a femur named Bonnie. Bonnie's aim is to show you how important it is to look after your bones as much as any other part of your body. Also how complicated bone can be as bonnie enters a scanner revealing holes in the inside of bone that are filled with blood vessels and gaps for bone cells.

Activity 5! For your next task you need to add the blood vessels and gaps filled with bone cells that Bonnie taught us about to the picture above! Using red for blood vessels and yellow for the gaps. This can be done using pens but ideally plasticine as it is important to remember these are 3D.

Activity 1! This questionnaire is to be completed before you begin any of the tasks! This is your first step in becoming a bone researcher as your answers can be used by scientists to better understand fracture. For this you will need a tape measure to measure your height and your femur which is the top long bone in your leg (your hip to your knee).

Activity 6! Scientists are now able to look inside bone using a high detailed scanner you'd find at a hospital (called a CT scan) and this is what they see. The red is the blood vessels and the yellow is gaps for bone cells just like your model! The scan in the video is 3D, can you see the blood vessels running the whole way through? These can be studied to get lots of information about the inside of bone and how peoples bones are different. At the moment they are looking at the difference between girls and boys bones!
