What Do You Do With An Idea?

I chose this book because in this book students will learn that their ideas may not be perfect right from the start. This book also explains that their idea in the beginning may differ from the ending their story has. It teaches them that is okay and normal for writing! Specifically I would use the sentences "But then I realized, what do they really know? This is MY idea, I thought." This teaches students to own their idea and be proud of it no matter what people say about it. I would teach students to be proud of their idea while also letting it evolve and grow. A good activity you could use with this is have students write down all their ideas on paper and see how they can make those ideas into reality. I think this text is for 1st-2nd graders but, any age can benefit from hearing the message of this story.

Diary of a Worm

I chose this book because it has a variety of diary entries short and long through a time period. I would use this for organization because the book goes through this characters life day by day. I would focus on the May 1st entry that takes us through what the character did all day to show their manners. An activity that could teach organization would be to have students keep a daily diary in class so they could understand the importance of staying within one day and going through writing in that way.

Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth

I chose this book because there are many sentences that flow together all while having different structures and lengths. This book would work best with 2nd graders. I also chose this book because it deals with history and may interest some students who like sports. I would focus on the part where the story says "Then is as it should be. Smooth as silk. Easy as air on the face. Right as falling water." because the sentences flow nicely. This shows students that sentences can flow without being long. An activity students could do is have students go through a piece of writing they have already written and look at their sentences. They could edit and revise those sentences to make the sentence fluency stronger.

Our Librarian Won't Tell Us Anything!

I chose this book because there is lots of dialogue that shows students the correct way of using capitalization, spelling correctly, punctuations etc. while also showcasing a multi cultural classroom. I would focus on the page where students are complaining their librarian will not tell them ANYTHING because it showcases conventions nearly perfectly. An activity students could do would be correcting sentences where conventions may be incorrect so they learn how to edit their own paper when the time comes.

I chose this book for the following reasons, 1. Jerome, the main character, loves and collects words and 2. He notices that some words pair very well together. I would use this book to have students create their own personal word walls. This book would work best for 1st-2nd grade but once again could work well for all grades. I would specifically use the page that says "Short and sweet words. Two-syllable treats." and use the words on that page to give students inspiration for their word wall.

I chose this book because it is full of character voice. You get to read the commentary a jellyfish has while trying to explain that jellyfish are not fish. I would use the page that states "Because... I am NOT a FISH!" as well as the one following. This really shows students how upset the jellyfish is and you can hear his voice a lot in those two pages. An activity you could use with this book is having students make a character (or have a character already picked out for them whichever works best!) and have them write in that characters voice.

I chose this book because its readable, experimental with fonts, and amazing integration of illustrations. This book is really presented wonderfully. Each image on a page goes hand in hand with the text. I would focus in on the D page where the d is getting dyed a color. I feel this could teach presentation because everything on the page deals with words starting with D. An activity a teacher could do with this is having students pick a letter and write a sentence about what the letter does. I would have them use their imagination and color a picture for their sentence.

I have recently found a love for social emotional learning. I chose this book for that reason and I truly believe this book makes a great mentor text. The presentation is great in this book as well as the hidden message behind it. I would focus on the page where the cookie has an aha moment to write a poem. I would take this and ask students how they knew the cookie had an aha moment. Typical answers would be the picture with red bold "AHA" text and bigger text where it says "A poem!" I would have students create a character that has an aha moment and ask them to express that with font sizes, punctuation, and pictures.

I chose this book because of the text bubbles and text presentation. I also happen to love the illustrations in this book. This books focus is on manners but, I would focus on the larger text. Throughout the book I would ask students what they thought the reason is that some text is bigger and some are colored. This would teach the presentation aspect due to the way everything is presented and it all has a reason.

I loved this book growing up!! It is a classic to me. This would be a great mentor text especially for the voice trait. We hear the main characters voice a lot and it makes the story that much better. I would have students think about how the main character sounds and how we got to think that. I would then have students apply that to their own writing.
