The United States is the world's largest producer of beef. Beef cattle farmers may operate under a cow-calf operation or a feedlot operation, raising and selling cattle to be processed into beef to feed the world.

Cow-calf operations consist of raising cattle, weaning cattle, then selling the calves that have been weaned.

Feedlot operations purchase the weaned calves, feed them, and get them up to market weight to sell them.

What does a beef producer do to feed the world?
The typical work routine of a beef producer is as follows:
- Daily feeding.
- Monitoring the herd for signs of illness and administering medication when needed.
- Maintaining facilities, fencing, and equipment.
- Assisting with breeding and calving.

Education requirements:
While no education is technically needed to be a beef producer, a bachelor's degree in animal science or agribusiness would be helpful for running and knowing the best route to go for your business. Hands-on experience is the most important factor in being successful as a beef producer.

How many head you have and how many head you sell will greatly determine how much you will profit that year. There are also many other factors that can affect your profit. In order to understand what a Bioterrorism Specialist does we must first understand what Bioterrorism is. Bioterrorism is the intent to cause harm to an economy or to its people. This is done by releasing various toxins, viruses, bacteria, or fungi.  Bioterrorism that affects our Agricultural industry is considered Agroterrorism.

Within the United States Customs and Border Protection Agency, Agroterrorism Specialists have a wide range of duties and are on the frontlines helping protect this industry. They work in ports of entry throughout the United States and its territories. Agroterrorism Specialists work to prevent the entry of unwanted pests, toxins, or any agriculture items on the no-go list for the U.S. Several of the pests and toxins will be covered in this blog.

Agroterrorism Specialists utilize a combination of education and government training to protect agricultural industries by land, sea, and air. They work with canines to monitor public areas, packages, and containers being shipped through ports of entry. These specialists work with high-tech equipment to detect prohibited items or biological agents. They work with other specialists, agents, and agencies to help protect our people, plants, animals, and waterways.

Coli. Ralstonia is a pathogen that causes brown rot, brown spots, and wilting in plants. In agriculture, this bacteria can cause the crop to be inedible and not able to grow or survive successfully. Some early stages of Ralstonia would appear on foliage in plants. 

Ralstonia enters plants through the roots to enter the plants' vascular system. The bacteria spread through the xylem and produces exopolysaccharides that obstruct the vessels. The compromised water conductance is what causes wilt. Some species of Ralstonia can cause infection in immunocompromised hosts, like patients with HIV or leukemia. It can cause bacteremia from contaminated intravenous products or airway colonization from contaminated respiratory therapy solutions.

They are responsible for making sure all of their dietary needs are met. 

Some of the work an animal nutritionist may work on is helping develop new pet food recipes, conducting quality tests of processed pet foods, consulting farmers on finding cost-efficient feeds, teaching others eating habits of the animals they own and care for, and in zoos, they’re responsible for establishing diet plans for exotic animals.

A day in the life of an animal nutritionist can look like this:
  • Working with veterinarians & veterinary technicians
  • Working with a specific group of animals 
  • Responsible for creating and balancing rations for animals 
  • Assess nutritional & caloric requirements based on an animal’s condition

In order to become an animal nutritionist, you need to at least possess a bachelor’s degree in a related field. This could be a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, agriculture, horticulture, general nutrition, etc. In the animal nutritionist career field, you have a higher chance of success if you’ve achieved a master’s degree or a Ph.D. Along with this, becoming a Veterinary nutritionist requires achieving a degree at any Veterinary college. Hands-on experience such as helping out at a veterinary clinic, conducting research, or helping out at an animal shelter are all experiences that help secure a career in the animal nutritionist field.

  • Job Outlook: Animal nutritionist has a positive outlook for job opportunities. From 2014 to 2024, there has been an estimation of 300 new jobs which is a 10.3% increase.

Some of the typical employers of animal nutritionists include animal and pet food manufacturers, government departments, educational and research institutions, universities, and farms or zoos.

Many don’t seem to realize how important a pet’s diet is and that it’s balanced. Pet food has to be formulated to fall within a narrow window of a specific nutrient, vitamin, and mineral values. Although pet treats are okay every now and then, too many treats or table scraps can throw them off balance and cause either deficiencies or excesses in them.

]]> 2021-10-20 22:20:20 UTC https://padlet.com/AGRI1000/Career_Blog/wish/1831771580 Marine Biologist https://padlet.com/AGRI1000/Career_Blog/wish/1831967536 A marine biologist is someone who studies marine life.  The occupation of the marine biologist is actually a lot more than what it seems, having tons of different tasks and even focuses based on a plethora of interests.  Most marine biologists, however, usually study both the life in the oceans as well as the oceans themselves; investigate behavioral and/or physiological processes of various marine species and also the diseases and/or environmental conditions that affect marine species; and they assess the impacts of human activities on marine life.

For the various specialties within the marine biologist career, they tend to require different skills and oftentimes different training/advanced degrees for the different focus or interest one intends to pursue.  Some specialties within marine biology include a marine biotechnologist, a marine mammologist, an ichthyologist, a veterinarian, an aquarist, and an environmental consultant.  These specificities within the marine biologist career have a great blend of both dry and wet jobs as well as a wide range of research interests depending on what one would like to focus on in regards to marine biology. 

Marine biologists require at least a bachelor's degree or a masters degree for entry level research at the bare minimum.  Some specialties one can go into may require additional degrees, such as a doctoral degree, or training.  Several colleges do offer a specific degree in marine biology; however, you can also step foot into the world of marine biology through a bachelors in biology, zoology, fisheries, ecology, and animal sciences.  Some notable colleges that do offer a marine biology specific degree are the University of Alabama, Auburn University, University of Miami, and Texas A&M.  If you are interested in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, and english (and of course marine life) then becoming a marine biologist might be the career for you!

Along with garnering a formal education, there are specific skills that are required to become a marine biologist.  Hard/Technical skills, which are skills obtained through said formal education as well as training programs, are very useful and required to have in this career field.  These include biostatistics, geographic information systems, technical writing skills, risk assessment abilities, knowledge around the legislation related to the marine sector, and project management skills.  Some soft skills, or desirable personal attributes and characteristics, are also required and helpful to have as a marine biologist.  These soft skills include verbal or written communication skills, being detail-oriented, stamina and/or endurance for various fieldwork, leadership skills, interpersonal skills, and being a creative thinker.

A lot of what a marine biologist does is research - the ocean is very vast and majority unexplored and there is still a lot of room to expand our knowledge in this sector.  Marine biologists frequently research organisms (microbiology, salmon, sharks, fish, invertebrates, mammals, and seabirds), processes of marine life (evolution/adaptation, animal behavior, genetics/genomes), habits and ecosystems (ecology - tropical, corals, and arctic -, oceanography), and the changing of oceans (conservation, climate/global change, resource, management, science communication).  The research areas, again, depend on one's focus or interest within marine biology.  Having such a wide variety of areas to research that cover plenty of interests allows for a wider range of researchers to help discover the many mysteries that still lie beneath the ocean's surface.

The starting salary for a marine biologist entering the field will vary based on what specialty you go into of course, but the average starting salary for a general marine biologist is usually around $23,950 per year.  The salary goes up, however, if one has a bachelor's degree raising the average salary to a range from $64,000 to $72,000 per year.  A doctoral degree can earn one $94,000 per year and raise higher from there.  The state with the highest average marine biologist salary is California with an average of $75,840 per year.

Conservation of our natural resources is key to the survival of all living things, and the people who work in conservation are dedicated to their purpose. Soil conservationists might even be the most important in the industry. Nothing grows and thrives without quality soil, and without the soil’s filtration system, water would not be safe for animals to consume. It begs the question, where would our world be without those dedicated to preserving soil? 
 
Education Requirements: 
The soil conservationist degree and degree plan is very attainable. At a minimum, someone wanting to enter this field is required to get a bachelor's in soil conservation, agronomy, soil science, forestry, agricultural education, or agricultural engineering. A majority of soil conservationists, around 81.6%, entered the work force after acquiring only their bachelor's degree. Any higher education obtained does not result in a pay increase; however, hands-on field experience and demographic location does directly impact the salary. Hands-on and shadowing experience is highly sought after because this allows students to get a feel for the environments they’ll be working in, and it allows the student to better understand and connect with the community they are serving.

The mean annual wage for a conservationist in Tennessee is $71,960, and there is an expected industry growth of 7%. Because of the heightened interest in preserving natural resources, the social appeal to become a soil conservationist appears to be growing at a much faster rate than in past years. This is evident in the manner which Tennessee farmers have embraced conservation practices in the last decade. Farmers are invested in protecting the resources they already have, so many are willing to consult with conservationists and change their management practices accordingly.

An Equine Farm Manager does exactly what the title states - they manage horse farms. But what exactly does managing a horse farm entail?

What does an Equine Manager Do?

 Well, first and foremost, the manager is responsible for overseeing all the farm’s operations. This includes providing nutritious food, clean water, and adequate space and exercise for the horses. It involves marketing the horses, whether that’s for pleasure riding, purchase stock, or breeding stock. They’re also in charge of purchasing, maintaining, or selling equipment, and they make operating decisions based on environmental, health, and market factors for short and long term, as well as best, worst, and most likely case scenarios.

What does an equine farm manager do on a daily basis?

The daily tasks are feeding and watering the horses and monitoring their health, inspecting equipment and performing maintenance if needed, and setting schedules for horse turnout and other worker’s tasks.

Is that all they do?

No, equine farm managers have many other tasks that do not require daily attention. The more frequent, but not quite daily, tasks include performing intensive repair, either on fences or damaged equipment; replacing worn out or outdated equipment, purchasing new supplies, and monitoring the farm’s profitability. It should also include setting and evaluating short term plans and budgets and adjusting them, based on whether or not they seem to be working. Lastly, the infrequent tasks involve meeting with veterinarians, farriers, and nutritionists; buying or selling horses, based on needed herd size; breeding procedures, either within the herd or by bringing in outside sources; and setting and evaluating long term plans and budgets, and adjusting those based on effectiveness.

Most of these tasks will be hands-on and performed outside, so a wise manager will probably invest in a good hat and effective sunscreen. However, there are some tasks, like making those budgets, that can be done inside with the blessed AC. Those will require use of a computer and likely some knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly the Word, Excel, and Access programs. 

What education do they need?

You have to have at least graduated high school - which, hopefully, everyone in here already has. You'll also need an Associate's or a Bachelor's degree in Equine Science or Management. Most importantly, you need to have hands-on experience with horses. No amount of education can substitute for physically interacting with horses, and it's really easy to get that experience; there are hundreds, if not thousands, of barns in Tennessee that would be happy to take volunteers or pay for lower level jobs, like cleaning the barn or caring for the horses.

Is a degree the only way?

You can get a job as an equine farm manager by simply having a degree in equine science or management. If this career appeals to you, MTSU has an excellent Horse Science program with many different facets and the ability to specialize.
 With that being said, not everyone has access to earning this degree. Some people may not have the time, money, or other resources to go through a two or four year college program.  You may only need to complete a certificate program in order to obtain this job. As said before, hands-on experience is also fundamental to becoming an equine farm manager. You can gain this experience through college-based internships, volunteer opportunities, or just through work-related experience. 

Okay but how much does it pay?

Equine Farm Managers can earn anywhere from $30,000 per year to $44,000 per year as a starting salary, depending on what you are specifically doing. Being a horse trainer will get you, on average, $37,000 per year, while being a ranch manager will get you about $46,000 per year on average. General farm managers can average $68,000 a year. Depending on what you specifically want to do, you will always want to do research before applying to that job, because the job description may not match what you think the title implies. 

So what’s the point?

When faced with the question of Equine managers, they hold an important role in agriculture. They are the main person in charge over an equine farm and they hold a high responsibility there. The work is hard, but it is also very rewarding to see horses grow and excel, students learn, and lifelong bonds be made between horse and rider. Whether it is your passion or focus to be an equine manager, as long as you are dedicated and willing to put in the work, it's possible to live your dream. Could there be more to beekeeping that the agriculture community should learn about? Beekeeping is the maintenance of bee colonies, commonly in man-made hives, by humans. A bee farm is called an apiary. Beekeepers are also known as apiarists, honey farmers, apiculturists, etc. Although many people maintain a few hives as a hobby, beekeeping can be a career.

First off, there are no educational requirements for beekeeping. In fact, only 60% of beekeepers have a bachelor’s degree and 40% have high school diplomas. Some degrees helpful in this field include Fish & Wildlife Management, Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Horticulture, Botany, Agriculture, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Biology, Agribusiness Management, and more. If you wish to obtain additional training before entering this field, you can participate in the master beekeeper, master farm manager, and master farm health certification programs.

 More experienced beekeepers make more than beginner beekeepers. However, on average beekeepers make around $45,000 a year. Typical work duties vary by season. In hot months, they overlook the building process of the nest, provide additional housing, and harvest honey. In cold months, they make repairs to the hive and keep an eye on the colony's food supply. In TN, you do NOT need licensing to be able to sell honey unless you are selling over 150 gallons per year. In that case, you would need to be inspected and licensed as a proper food manufacturing facility.

Being a CBP is not the only government job for an Agroterrorism specialist.  Examples would include a State's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Department of Defense, or Department of Health Services.  Smaller companies will contract out specialist to run labs or inform the company of possible threats.  An Agroterrorism specialist contracted with a company will be highly specialized.

Bioterrorism specialist affect all careers; however, an Agroterrorism specialist will deal more with and in agriculture.  These specialist inform the company's board and the board will inform their employees.  The employees will then tell the customers about possible threats or outbreaks.  Without Agroterrorism specialist, the general public would not know what to look for. 

Outbreaks Agroterrorism specialist warn about range in their level of severity. Examples include the CDC recalling frozen cook shrimp because of salmonella poisoning to the CDC warning the public about a possible anthrax outbreak. Companies can report to the National Outbreak Reporting System to inform the public about threats Agroterrorism specialist find. Other examples of bacteria Agroterrorism specialist look for include Ralstonia and E. A specific work routine can vary depending on the position held. An example of a routine: the conservationist will access individual farms while considering the surrounding areas and environmental factors. Once the conservationist is familiar with the particular situation, they can devise a plan that the farmer will execute. The soil conservationist might even try to work with a precision agriculture expert to provide the farmer with ways to protect resources by using only what is needed. There are many different jobs in soil conservation that can fit many different individuals, and this is only an example of one.

Soil conservation is growing to be more common in Tennessee. According to a 2020 study, five out of ten Tennessee farmers are now utilizing cover crops to protect and enhance their soil profile. Also, in a 2018 study, 96% of Tennessee farmers are now using conservation tilling practices to prevent disturbing the soil. These numbers just go to show how popular soil conservation is and will continue to be in the future! 
 
Soil conservation is a vital safeguard that ultimately helps sustain the economy and the environment. Now is the time to focus all efforts through marketing and education of our younger generations about soil conservationist career paths to help encourage and energize people to look at things with an open mind. Generating excitement about soil conservation and the soil conservation degree is critical for sustaining our growing population throughout the United States and around the world and for preventing further depletion of and harm to soil. It’s imperative for attention on soil science to grow and the number of soil scientists and conservationists to increase in order to support the demands for and needs from land. The common goal should be for those around us to be asking the questions pertaining to this; how can we use this knowledge we have gained from this learning experience now and moving forward?

The Feed Mill Operator is accountable for the procedures of mixing, storing, and delivering livestock feed for an assortment of animals including: swine, cattle and poultry. They also ensure the mill is kept clean, proper maintenance of equipment if performed, and safety measures are followed. They also assist the feed Mill Manager. Some of the biggest Feed Mill Operations include: Cargill, Land O Lakes, ADM, and Nutreco.

 Education:
 A college education is not required but must contain a high school diploma to get this job. If a college education is pursued, they must have a bachelors degree in feed/grain science or an animal agricultural  related field is usually needed.  Any technological college, TSU, University of Tennessee Knoxville and University of Memphis are a few colleges that give a degree in this field. Based on education percentages of a feed mill operator: high school diploma-36%, bachelors-27% and associate-23%.

Salary:
 The average Feed Mill Operator salary is $29,425 annually and $14.15 per hour in the United States. In Tennessee alone the annual salary is $ 24,385 and $11.72 per hour. Salaries will increase more in the west for Feed Mills are more common and there are larger feed lots.  The highest annual salary you can earn is $38,000 and $18 hourly wage.

 Physical Requirements?
 Feed Mill Operators will need to be capable of lifting 60 pound bags of feed, sit or stand for extended periods of time, and climb ladders. They also operate equipment such as pallet jacks, forklifts, skid steers and trucks. Must be able to tolerate extreme ranges of seasonal temperatures (hot to cold).Must be able to tolerate grain dust, chemical odors, and frequently noisy conditions.

Job outlook:
 The job outlook is expected to increase over the next few years. Coli, a bacteria that is commonly found in undercooked food, under baked goods, the environment, and the intestines of people and animals. Although the majority of E. E. coli use flagella to penetrate cell walls, where they colonize on the surface of the plant. Some E. coli can invade the plant body system which protects them, which is why washing is not always an effective method to avoiding this bacterium. The bovine digestive tract, specifically the cecum, is believed to be the main source of E. coli entering the food system. E. coli O157 produces a toxin that damages the lining of the intestinal wall known as enterohemorrhagic E. coli infection.

This career is just for you! An animal geneticist analyzes the genetic makeup of animals for scientific research and may also study animal health. This career can also take place on a farm assisting with the breeding operations.
     A typical work routine consists of maintaining laboratory notebooks that record research methods, procedures, and results. They evaluate, diagnose, or treat genetic diseases. They also search scientific literature to select and modify methods and procedures and attend clinical and research conferences Instruct medical students, graduate students, or others in methods/procedures. This career can be hands-on, in the laboratory, or a mixture of both. 
     In any career, some form of education will be required; this career requires a bachelor's degree in genetics followed by a master’s degree. The Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science with training is recommended; some roles may require a doctorate-level degree. Let’s talk about salary. Starting salaries range from $37,830 -$120,500- educational level influences if you are on the higher side or lower side of that range.  
A few interesting facts are an animal geneticist can be employed at pharmaceutical companies, state or federal government agencies, or breeding companies. The job market is expected to grow in the next 5 years. People in this career can impact agriculture substantially. This job can help keep local farmers in business by helping these farmers stay up to date with new techniques and technology. Farmers, ranchers, or other agriculture managers run establishments that produce crops, livestock, and dairy products. Some of the daily duties include milking (obviously), feeding the cattle, identifying and caring for sick or injured livestock, and breeding/calving processes. The cool thing about dairy farms is that they are typically family owned.
Because of this, not much education is required to actually work on a dairy producing unit. At minimum, a high school diploma is suggested. However, there are certain college majors that can greatly benefit you when starting this career, such as Animal Science, Dairy Business, or Agribusiness. If you’re not necessarily looking for a four year degree, perhaps an associates in Animal Science or Animal Husbandry would be a better option. And if schooling isn’t your thing, don’t worry! There are various certifications you can complete to show proficiency in dairy producing; for example, the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA) offers the Accredited Farm Manager (AFM) credit to those who prove their exceptional experience and expertise. Other companies or schools may offer their own versions of credit programs.

At as early as 5:30 AM, the cows are hooked up to milking machines and workers set up the parlor. Afterward, the dairy workers set out food for the cows. Later in the day, the cows are milked again, and the workers clean the parlor and feed the calves. Here is a rotary parlor (figure c). As for salary, starting off may seem a bit rough. Average salary fluctuates from farmer to farmer depending on factors like profit and how productive of a year it was. The average starting annual salary of a beginner level dairy producer is about $21,590. Like anything, however, as you grow in experience you’re sure to see the money start to rise. Mid-level dairy farmers tend to earn about $26,448 annually, around $5,000 more! Even more, top level producers earn roughly $46,104 a year. And while you won’t exactly be living in the height of luxury, many have found that the pay is only part of it; at the end of the day it’s the hard work that makes it all worth it.

    Job Description 
    Although being a florist seems like a low stress or easy job, there are many moving parts. Florists are not only responsible for designing arrangements but also making sure they arrive at their destination. They also help in-store customers, answer phone calls, and consult their clients. Besides having good people skills, florists also need to have excellent knowledge of the plants and flowers they are working with in order to create the best arrangements for their clients' needs. 

    Education and Entering the Workforce 
    For entry level florists, the educational background is a high school diploma or GED and no previous experience is required. Although a college degree is not required, an associates or bachelors in floral design, floriculture, or horticulture can only do you good in this career. There are also other routes to becoming a florist, such as taking programs approved by the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) or licensed by the state. Once you’ve acquired your florist position there are two big things to focus on in order to further your career. Cultivating your own style and practice. No two florist are the same, that’s why it is important to differentiate yourself from your peers and competition. And like most creative jobs, practice is the key to success. 

    Job Outlook and Money Talk - 
    As of 2020, reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of florist jobs was 42,300. However, the job outlook between 2020-2030 is to decline by 20%. To talk money, the median pay for 2020 was $14/hr. And the salary was $29,140. In the middle Tennessee area, the low annual salary was at $25,750 and the high was $40,300.

          Is Equine Chiropractic important?  An equine chiropractor is a highly educated professional in their field. In order to become an equine chiropractor, you must first attain a doctorate of either veterinary medicine or human chiropractic. After the doctorate you must obtain additional certification in order to legally adjust horses. 

         The additional training helps prepare students for the certification exam administered by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association. These training programs are available around the US. The certification programs do not differ for students with a veterinarian degree or chiropractic degree. The certification programs also offer continuing education units. 
     
            An equine chiropractor’s daily responsibilities can look very similar to a human chiropractor with the exception that most equine chiropractors travel to different barns and do not have a stationary office. The primary responsibility of a professional during a farm call is to diagnose the problem’s origin and determine the appropriate treatment. This usually includes manipulation of the body to help align and restore bio-mechanical equilibrium. The Chiropractor sometimes leaves the owner with specific exercises or instructions to help maintain proper alignment and comfort for the horse.            Diagnosis can sometimes be difficult compared to verbal and whiny humans. An equine chiropractor must watch horses and listen to owner’s clues in order to even determine the origin of pain. The patient’s gait must be evaluated to detect lameness.          Horse Chiropractors salary can range widely depending on the location and the quality of their patients. The median salary falls around 45,000 a year. Apprentices and assistants can make 12- 24,000 a year as they are becoming more familiar with the field and deciding if they want to pursue the career. The middle spectrum professionals can make as much as 115,000 with the highest earners coming in around 250,000.     What is the daily routine of an Animal Embryologist?
    Animal Embryologists mostly work in the lab. They are usually sat in front of a microscope studying. They use tiny micromanipulators to do things such as fertilizing an egg to later implant in a recipient's reproductive tract.

    A bachelor’s degree in an animal-related major is required. These could be animal reproduction, animal science, or biology degrees. Graduate education is encouraged but it is not required. The more education or certifications you receive, the better your pay grade is likely to be.
