His life also paints a good picture of someone who went through tremendous personal and moral growth. I would argue that Lincoln can teach students about the ability of people with adverse views to change and grow as they age and experience. Although he did not free the slaves, he played an important role and there is no way of knowing what the outcome of slavery might have been without Lincoln push for the 13th amendment. I feel it I also important to teach about Lincoln as a man not as a myth. He was not a "savior." He had numerous hardships and trauma in his life that many people don't know about. I think that delving into his home life and his life before the presidency, can open up new insight into how he acted ad his decisions made during the civil war.
