         <description><![CDATA[<div>For example, when Lindo Jong had to marry  Tyan-yu and be an obedient wife.  Tyan's mother, Taitai said on page 57, “‘Bad wife!’ she cried. ‘If you refuse to sleep with my son, I refuse to feed or clothe you.’ So that’s how I knew what my husband had said to avoid his mother’s anger. I was boiling with anger, but I said nothing, remembering my promise to my parents to be an obedient wife.” This shows that men had a more prominent voice over women.<br> </div>]]></description>

He asked for a divorce while he was in LA. This clearly shows that Tan is trying to portray men as bad people.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In the book the men were depicted as being the more dominant ones in the relationship and giving more authority. They'd constantly be telling the women what to do in a sense and always being the one telling the other what to do. Like on&nbsp; Page 57 when it states,&nbsp; “ Bad wife he cried. If you refuse to sleep with my son, i refuse to feed or clothe you." Here you can see how the male is telling his wife that she has to do that task or pay the consequence. This makes the wife appear weaker which is how the women are portrayed here.</div>]]></description>

         <title>In the book, Joy Luck Club it said &quot; I knew what type of husband he would be, because he made special efforts to make me cry.&quot; Tan is somewhat fair because back then, China was a patriarchal society so women had to take orders from a men in the household. In one of my classes i learned how China was patriarchal, and if a wife did not have a father or husband she had to take orders from her son.</title>

We here about them some other times such as when Uncle Tin starts to joke about Waverly marrying "Rich," but both of these times the men are just used to give affect of background events to the story and not as actual in-depth characters. </div>]]></description>
