Pre-reading Considerations

1. The top five qualities I admire most in others are loyalty, honesty, compassion, a sense of humor, and openness. I admire loyalty in a person because if someone is always going to treat you with respect and stay true to you then they are evidently a great person towards you. If someone does not contain loyalty towards you it shows that they will not keep a good relationship with you. I admire honesty because if someone is not honest wth you or towards you it is nearly impossible to have a healthy relationship with that person. I value honesty deeply and once someone earn my trust I expect them to respect it. I admire compassion because if someone is kind to me and have compassion towards me it shows that they deeply care about me. I also value a sense of humor in a person because without a good sense of humor you would never be able to see what a person is really like. They way someone jack keys around can reveal a lot about themeselves. Also, if one does not have a sense of humor it would not be fun to be around them. Lastly a quality I value is if the person is open-minded or not. I value this because someone like that will always be willing to try new things with you and they are able to keep an open-minded out look on people and life.
2. No my parents do no want me to follow in their footsteps in terms of a career, although they do set boundaries as to what they think I should not pursue in. I think parents putting pressure on their children to follow in their footsteps is unjust. When you pursue a career, you are going to have to do it for much of your life, so it should be something that you and enjoy and something that makes you happy. Also, children and their parents have different qualities. Some of these qualities that are in the parents may be good for one job but the qualities in their child may not be good for that specific job. That is why a parent should allow their child to pick a job that they want.

Literary Responses to Chapters 1 and 2

In Dr. Werhner von Braun’s quote is explaining that the one can only leave a significant mark in a child’s head by the knowledge you give them. He is explaining that education is above all the most important. Education is more significant than materialistic items and knowledge is one of the only things that can no be taken away. This quote is attempting to thematically suggest that the characters in the book need knowledge and later on they will ultimately use education and value it above any other object.

In the quote by Miss Freida Joy Riley I believe she is trying to explain how people need to seek out to learn and grasp what can be attained from the simplest things in life. She is trying to explain that people need to dig deeper and be brave to discover things about the real world in order to attain knowledge and discover new truths. I think this quote is trying to thematically suggest that it this novel, character such as Sonny will look deeper into simpler things and discover truths about the world of them. This might even be a hint for the reader to look deeper into the book and for the reader to discover new things and learn things. Miss Freida was trying to display for the world that the takeaway is that you might be given something as simple as a few words like this quote but we need to dig deeper and find and reveal true meanings.

Literary responses #2

Sonny deeply cares about his mother and values her and appreciates what she has done for him. On the other hand he has a more difficult time forming a connection with his father and brother, and does not look at them the same way he looks at his mother. In the book Sonny thinks that, “Mom was beautiful. When she smiled it was like a hundred-watt bulb just got switched on. He curly hair fell past her shoulders, she had big hazel green eyes, and her voice, when she wasn’t using it to keep me and Jim straight, was soft and velvety.” (Hickam, 31). Sonny proves in this quote how highly he thinks of his mother and how much his mother means to him. Sonny does not have that bond with his father due to the fact that his father pays no attention to him and never acknowledges what he tries to do that is helpful and beneficial. Sonny angrily states that, “I had acted stupidly, but Dad’s reaction was vile and despicable. ‘My dad’s the meanest man in this town.” (Hickam, 97). Sonny, though this quote, evidently thinks very poorly of his father compared to the way he thinks of his mother. Sonny might define the role of family as something challenging. He might define it as something you need to work at in order to have a strong and trustworthy bond with that person.
