Stage 1: Trust vs Mistrust

Erikson's first stage of development is vital to a person's development in life. This stage is where a child learns to trust and contributes to their outlook on life. Someone who is neglected or can not trust their caregiver in this stage is likely to have a negative outlook later in life.
John would create a fuss when he was hungry. When he was fussy, his mother would feed him. She would always make sure that John had enough milk, or the " balance of care is sympathetic and loving". This resulted in John having a positive outlook later in life.

Stage 2: Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt

The second stage of Erikson's development deals with a person's choices in life. A resolution in autonomy creates a person who are confident in their decisions and take control in their life. To encourage this, a child should be given choices in what they want to do.
When John was 2 he began picking out shirts he would like to wear. He was also not pressured to make choices he did not want to. John's parents practiced "warm, sensitive parenting" that resulted in John being more autonomous.

Children at this level of their development focus on their ability to interact with their environment. A child with initiative will be more likely to do things on their won and lead.
John was always very social in kindergarten. This, along with " patient, reasonable adult guidance and play experiences with peers," resulted in him being a leader and taking up tasks on his own by 6 years old.

When children are encouraged to be proficient at skills as a child, they result as children who are more confident in their abilities in the future.
John loved reading as a child. His parents always encouraged him to read higher level books and expressed to him they were proud of skills. This resulted in Industry and "positive but realistic self-concept, pride in accomplishment, moral responsibility, and cooperative participation with agemates".

This stage is where a person establishes security in their moral, emotional, and religious self.
When John was a teen, his parents always made sure that he was heard and feelings made valid. This helped him form "into a solid inner core that provides a mature identity" Now John is confident in his self worth and his values.

It is an important that people develop strong relationships with others in their lives. If they do not they are more likely to descend into loneliness and isolation and have a more grim outlook on life.
John had no problem creating strong bonds with those that he loved.
