J. Dietrich and J. Gibbon
We shared part of our morning routine. We wanted to focus on using the ten frame. At the beginning of the year it focuses on number recognition and subutizing numbers as we would add a new chip each day. We have a fish bowl that the student of the day adds a fish to initially count to 100 days of school. After 100 days of school we moved to addition and looking for what two numbers they see each morning as we switch one chip over from yellow to red. The student of the day writes the number sentence. Ten frames and manipulative are available at our math centres as an extension.

This was used to make groups of ten for multiplication and then the students were asked to communicate how using the ladybug templates helped them to solve. Many students lack confidence to write so encouraging them to label their models.

I've attached the Google Slide that Kristina Van Hees and I used to introduce "The Bar" to my class. The success criteria is based off of a checklist we (along with many other math minds) developed a few years ago! Through the gradual release of responsibility, students are now able to physically self-assess, set goals and have a constant visual of our problem-solving criteria. I have also seen adaptations of the bar where the criteria changes (becomes more specific) depending on what concepts are being taught.
