This creates the strong sense of belonging to Singapore and other ideal environments to trade and deal.

2. Immigrants may not feel the same as how they felt in their  own country as the Singapore environment is very different from theirs. For example, immigrants may feel uncomfortable when interacting with Singaporeans as they are already used to interacting with their own people. It can cause consequences like racism, misunderstanding, or any other  unnecessary criticisms. For Singaporeans, they may have a harder time to find job opportunities as more immigrants are replacing them, that may cause the Singapore population to decrease, if Singaporeans decided to look for more job opportunities in other countries.

2. Because Singapore may be far away from home for most immigrants, they may feel homesick even with the constant and abundant reminders of home. Some may want to try to assimilate into our society and culture after some time living in the country, but that is oftentimes difficult to achieve because of a negative perception of immigrants present amongst a substantial demographic of the Singaporean population, particularly the cohort of baby boomers, which precipitates an unnecessary tension between these two groups of people. This could lead to unnecessary racism.  However, there may be instances where foreigners will misunderstand the situation and take that people are being racist towards them. For example, the 2013 Little India riot took place because a drunk Indian thought that he wasn't allowed on the bus because of his race when it was actually because the bus captain was ensuring the safety of the passengers. This lead to the Indian man's friends overthrowing the bus which grew into a riot. Taking the Japanese community as an example, many Japanese immigrant communities choose to shop at either Liang Court and Clarke Quay Central. These shopping malls have supermarkets that offer authentic Japanese produce. As such, this reflects the Japanese community’s preferences of consuming goods that they have been used to consuming back at their homeland I.e. authentic Japanese produce.  In addition, Japanese-style celebrations can be found in those malls for example the New Year celebrations at Liang Court. These reflect the Japanese community’s need to feel a sense of national identity and unity, as these celebrations bring the Japanese together as well as display Japanese culture to remind them of their identity.

2.The presence of areas mentioned above can make some Singaporeans feel that their own national identity is threatened. As these areas promote the Japanese culture,  some Singaporeans may end up admiring their culture and risk getting their way of living and thinking influenced by its culture, for instance by reading their mangas and at times involve themselves in Japanese celebration. This may result in a dilution of the Singaporean culture hence identity. Therefore, this can cause tension to those Singaporeans who feel that their national identity is threatened by this.

One possible tension faced by the Japanese communities is high costs. Even though they are able to consume authentic  Japanese produce offered by these areas, due to import taxes, the fact remains that these goods are limited in variety and also expensive. These Japanese communities may therefore feel disadvantaged and diminished living in a society where they have to spend extra dollars just to consume their cultural produce in addition to its lack of variety and options.

With the increasing demands of eateries and ethnic activities, buildings have to be constructed to meet the wants of the public. However, the prices of these developments can be costly. For example, due to the demand of more Japanese eateries, more had to be constructed. This area is rich in the needs and preferences for Thai immigrants. this invokes a strong sense of belonging

Besides that, more Japanese eateries and shops opened around the island to cater to the increasing number of Japanese expatriates arriving. Liang Court and Clarke Quay Central is also filled with authentic Japanese produce.

These areas have accommodated to the needs and preferences of the immigrant's community by making them feel like they have a piece of home here in Singapore.


2. what could be some possible tensions faced by these communities and by Singaporeans with the presence of these areas?

The possible tensions faced by these communities is that they may experience conflict from Singaporeans because there some Singaporeans that dislikes the presence of foreigners or immigrants that are different from them and the fact that foreigners are having better work opportunities and the Singaporeans will be bias towards them.

These situations will lead to fights and racism among them. But for some situations, the foreigners would be the ones that misunderstand the Singaporeans and will think that they are being racist towards them and would go back to their own country. This would therefore affect the economy and reputation of Singapore.

One example of a riot that occured in Little India caused because of a drunk indian that thought he wasn't allowed on the bus but actually the bus driver was ensuring the safety of passengers. And there were other Indians that helped the drunk man in the fight which caused a big riot.

Therefore, racism can cause a big fight among other communities.
