The first sign of syphilis is a small painless sore called a chancre. This sore usually appears about 3 weeks after the initial exposure. Secondary syphilis starts to occur once the original sore has healed. Then a rash starts to appear over the entire body including the palm of the hands and the soles of the feet. Hair loss, muscle aches, fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes may occur as well. If syphilis is left untreated a person could go into the latent (hidden) stage where there are no symptoms. Lastly, Tertiary syphilis untreated syphilis will lead to more complications like damage to the brain, nerves, heart, blood vessels, liver, and more. Women who have syphilis can infect their unborn child through the placenta or while giving birth. Babies born with syphilis could be born early, die in the womb or after birth. Other signs and symptoms in babies include deafness, teeth deformities, and saddle nose. Syphilis can be cured with the right antibiotics.
