An engagement that can be used to invite students to explore the content of young adult violence and abuse is the Book-Head-Heart reading framework. The BHH reading can be applied to any read at any time with any book out there. Students are encouraged to participate in what Rosenblatt (1982) refers to as "the literary transaction" by reading "Book, Head, Heart." "Reading is a transaction, a two-way process, involving a reader and a text at a particular time, under particular circumstances." It would inspire students to interact with the text and with one another; I believe it would be an excellent strategy to utilize in the classroom.

This structure encourages the reader to consider the ideas and thoughts that came to them while they read and the feelings the narrative evoked. Relating BHH to young adult violence, each novel I introduce to them, I would have them complete a BHH. Using it correlating to the book I'm Glad My Mom Died, we can use the chart to see how they interpret the book. "What is the book about? Who's telling the story? What does the author, Jannette, want me to know? Then, in my head, what surprised me about the book? What changed my thinking, and what did I notice? Finally, in my heart, what did I learn about myself, or how will this benefit me and help me improve in the future?
