Writer in the Dark by Lorde. Lorde has a lyric that says, "Sorry I was never good like you" Amir feels that he has to live up to his father and become as good as him. When he is thinking about the how his father says he might win the kite race, Amir says, "He had won because winners won" and then "didn't he have the right to expect the same from his son." Lorde says "I am my mother's child", connecting to Amir having more characteristics from his mom, for example reading and writing stories, than he does from his dad.

Randy Newman "You've got a friend in me"
Newman has a line saying "There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you, We stick together and see it through". Hassan is very pure and believes that everyone is honest when they say how they feel. He doesn't realize Amir's jealousy and slight disdain. He said he would eat dirt for Amir, all while Amir feels as if there is something "fascinating-albeit in a sick way- about teasing Hassan. But no matter what, at this point in Hassan's life, he would do anything for Amir, with the belief that Amir feels the same.

I chose "You Got a Friend in Me" by Randy Newman because Chapter 6 again shows how much Hassan worships his friendship with Amir. Every winter, Amir and Hassan spend time together flying kites and playing cards. When Amir asked Hassan if he was willing to eat dirt if he asked him to, Hassan replied "If you asked, I would." This shows how loyal Hassan is towards Amir and may foreshadow an event where Hassan will do anything Amir asks him to.
I also chose "Memories" by Maroon 5 because the narrator, Amir, is recalling the winters he spent with Hassan and how was his favorite time of the year. For instance, Amir recalls that that was the last time he saw Hassan run a kite in "the winter of 1975."

Amir isn't really honest with Hassan about their "friendship" and misleads Hassan into thinking they are closer than they ae.
Song 2: Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift
This song talks about remembering or hoping for things even if "its in your wildest dreams". Amir dreams about winning the kite running tournament and he also dreams about having a good father/son relationship with Baba.

I chose the songs "Jealousy, Jealousy" by Olivia Rodrigo and "High Hopes" by Panic! at the Disco.
I chose "Jealousy Jealousy" by Olivia Rodrigo because Amir has jealousy towards Hassan. Hassan seems to have all the characteristics that Baba wanted in a child. He was precise, athletic, and naturally smart. Amir downplays his achievements focusing only on what Hassan excels at. Amir "always envied his natural athleticism" (53), which relates back to how Baba was as a child.
I chose "High Hopes" by Panic! at the Disco because Baba and Hassan create a high expectation for Amir, telling him that he has a great chance of winning the kite runner tournament that year. Amir, because of this, begins to have more confidence in his abilities stating that "wasn't going to fail Baba. Not this time" (57).

The first song I chose was "1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins because it's from the perspective of an adult looking back on childhood and being nostalgic about it. They think about how they used to be carefree and recount childhood activities. The point of the song is about how you can never get that time back, but when it was there you didn't even worry about anything, you were just having the time of your life and not worrying about anything or what you'd think when you're older. The lyrics that resonate with me about the meaning of the song are: "That we don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
To dust, I guess forgotten and absorbed to the earth below". I thought this song was fitting because the chapter about flying kites sort of gave off this carefree vibe. He talked about when school got let out in the winter and most people were happy. Since the narrator is re-telling his childhood story in "The Kite Runner" I thought it fit to use a song from this perspective as well.

The second song I chose was "We're Gonna Be Friends" by The White Stripes because it has a very friendly and carefree and innocent mood to it, but with a different perspective, it could be taken completely differently. On the surface the song is from a child's perspective, retelling daily events of going to school and playing with their friend. The line "I can tell we're going to be friends" repeats throughout the song after each new event they tell about, including "chasing all the ants and worms...Nouns, and books, and show and tell..."and other elementary age activities. But a line that resonates with the point I'm trying to make is "We don't notice any time pass...We don't notice anything" because it represents the passing of childhood ideals and ways. It also can represent how this song is about a new friend, but also about how friends come and go, and the passing of time means the passing of friends. I thought this would be fitting with the relationship of Hassan and Amir since it's so complicated. So innocent on Hassan's side, but inside Amir we see a totally different perspective.

I chose "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" by the Smiths. The name pretty much sums it up, but this song reflects Amir's desperation for his father's love and affection.
I also chose "Bitter" by Palace. It's a bitter love song, but I think it can again be applied to Amir's desire to be loved by his father. He wants that affection so badly but his father refuses to give that to him, yet gives it to Hassan. This causes Amir to be bitter, but he still holds onto hope that he will receive that love someday.

Using the kite competition as an opportunity to gain his praise.

I chose the song "Trust me" by The Fray because it describes the fight between Hazara's and Pashtun's. More specifically Amir and Hassan, considering the other as a brother but still not being able to hold an equal position in the relationship the two have been able to create.

I chose the song "Loyalty" by Kendrick Lamar because it relates to Amir and Hassans relationship with eachother. Hassan is completely loyal to Amir in a way that Amir will never be toward Hassan. In the song, there's a part that lists of questions of who a person's loyal to and if its "ends with your family and friends?" which I thought related a lot to the relationships between all the characters throughout the chapter.
The second song I chose was "Jealousy, Jealousy" by Olivia Rodrigo because I thought its spoken word type of lyrics and the insecurities displayed in the song related a lot to Amir's jealousy and insecurity when it comes to comparing himself to Hassan as well as Hassan's relationship with Baba.

The first song I chose was "To Build a Home" by The Cinematic Orchestra. I chose this song because Amir's house isn't a home to him because it lacks the warmth and love a home is supposed to have, so Hassan is like his home. It also relates to Hassan because he doesn't even have a real house, so Amir is his home and is what makes his life worth living. The song also has the lyrics "Out in the garden where we planted the seeds
There is a tree as old as me." This relates to the tree they climb and hangout in, they made the trees their own.

The second song I chose was "Take on the World" by You Me At Six. This song relates to them while they are flying the kite together because in that moment they are a team and equals. The lyrics say "Nobody knows you the way the I know you" because they have been together since birth and almost every moment after. It also says "Look in my eyes, I will never desert you" which reminds me of how Hassan will do anything for Amir and wants nothing more than to just stay by his side. The song also says "And it's the fight, the fight of our lives" which relates to Amir and how badly he wants to win for Baba.

In the text it states, “Hassan returned the smile. Except his didn’t look forced.” This proves that Hassan is someone who, unlike Amir, values his time with Amir. Not only is Hassan just loyal, but he is truthful and “mean[s] every word [he] says.” In the song, “Wherever you go,” the lyrics, “Stay by your side.. Wherever you go,” best represents the relationship Hassan has with Amir.

“Kids,” Current Joys
I chose this quote to symbolize the game that Amir and Hassan play as kite runners.
Amir describes Hassan’s innocence, saying, “That was the thing with Hassan.
