Hinton the setting of the book is rough and diverse. I found this setting to fit this book because of what the main characters in this book go through. In the book there are two main groups of people the Greasers and the Socs (Socials).  These are two groups of people  or gangs dislike one another. The Greasers are the street kids and the Socs are the rich kids. The main characters of the book are Greasers who grew up on the streets trying to stay out of trouble.  For Greaser it is kinda  impossible to stay out of trouble. The main characters are constantly getting jumped, watching fights or getting involved in other negative activities.  With parents not around it tends to get pretty hectic. Soda: Ponyboys second oldest brother who is 16 he his described as "always happy-go-lucky and grinning." and "always happy-go-lucky and grinning." 

Darry: Ponyboys oldest brother who is 20 he works as a roofer and is described as "hard and firm and rarely grins at all," by Ponyboy

Two-Bit: his real name is Keith  but got his nickname because "you couldn't shut that guy up; he always had to get his two-bits worth in." He is the oldest member of the the greaser gang, and "the wisecracker of the bunch."  pony boy describes him as about six feet tall, stocky in build, and very proud of his long rusty-colored sideburns. He had gray eyes and a wide grin, and he couldn't stop making funny remarks to save his life... He liked fights, blondes, and for some unfathomable reason, school."

Dally: Dally's real name is Dallas Winston, and he is the toughest member of the greaser gang. Ponyboy describes him as having "an elfish face, with high cheekbones and a pointed chin, small, sharp animal teeth, and ears like a lynx. His hair was almost white it was so blond, and he didn't like haircuts, or hair oil either, so it fell over his forehead in wisps and kicked out in the back in tufts and curled behind his ears and along the nape of his neck. His eyes were blue, blazing ice, cold with a hatred of the whole world."

Johnny: Johnny Cade is the second-youngest in the greaser gang, besides Ponyboy. He is "smaller than the rest, with a slight build. He had big black eyes in a dark tanned face; his hair was jet-black and heavily greased and combed to the side, but it was so long that it fell in shaggy bangs across his forehead. He had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes... E. Hinton the author portrays author's craft by using descriptive words about the setting surrounding the main characters and the main character's appearance. S. E. Hinton categorizes the characters as either a greaser or a social. When one group is being talked about in the book the author describes their looks and their friends  friends. For example when a greaser was talked about in the book the the author would constantly talk about their grease slicked back hair which they all had. They resolve their problem by going back to their town, and turning themselves in to the police.
