Although Norman Rockwell did explore some themes regarding the civil rights movement, his work was more centered around the average, white American lifestyle in the early-to-mid 20th century. His work was uplifting and humorous, as his characters often displayed excited or emotion-filled expressions. However, he “white-washed” or glossed over many ever-present issues with these happy-go-lucky paintings. They are considered standard American classics. Elizabeth Catlett primarily focused on the oppressed state of the black man and woman in her art, making it have a more serious and dark tone. Her art focused on the individual, rather than a scene or place. Her works were often criticized for their contriversal themes.
