People would have come to the Americas even if Columbus hadn't written that letter. Colonizers would have found their way to these lands and interacted with the natives just as he did, but it may have slowed the process, and he likely wouldn't have been able to get funding.

This is comparable to the Encomienda system because the cultures behind slavery were very similar. Both were economic frameworks where a powerful higher class used fear and racial hierarchy to exploit and control a people/labor force. In both cases, the control was justified through the idea of law (and divine providence) to gain more wealth and keep the social order in check through suppression.
