The media undoubtedly has an influence over the music industry and its followers, however the extent of which we are influenced varies from person to person. This padlet looks to discuss globalisation and whether or not the industry is shaped more by consumers and artists rather than media and the industry itself.

A valid point is that the music industry works in a supply and demand process. Without the demand for the music and equally, the audience to listen to it there would simply be no industry left. Social media is an essential tool in this process, as the public can share a video and within 24 hours have over a million views, sparking a viral trend.
Alternatively, music nowadays requires the support of the internet and media to make a stamp on the world. Without the media and its funds, it is likely that many of the trends and genres we have witnessed in recent times would have simply died out by now. It is arguable that the reason they have continued their success on a global scale is due to the medias investment. A good example of this is the surge of popularity surrounding the 'trap' genre of music. Many artists have found extended fame as a result of social media influence, such as Post Malone and Childish Gambino granting them a vast audience across the world.

An example of globalisation is the rise to fame of Justin Beiber. Beiber started off posting videos of him performing on YouTube, until he was scouted by an agent and shortly after signed to a record label. He quickly became a teen sensation and gained a massive audience following. This all happened through YouTube and Facebook. These websites would not have came about without the development of digital technologies through globalisation. 10 years later from then and many aspiring artists are still using the same method, including myself in hopes of gaining some recognition.

I have recently started my own facebook page promoting myself as a musician. The page is still very premature but in the short period of time it has been running, I have achieved 200 followers, and accumulated a total of over 7,000 views, which in a relative context for me personally is a good start. This has all been made possible through globalisation and the power of social media.

Global availability has both positive and negative outcomes for the industry. It is becoming increasingly accessible to get anything, from anywhere. In business terms, a multinational business deal can be completed over a Skype call, whereas traditionally this would have required a plane journey. Music works in the same concept. With the internet and streaming becoming an important part of everyday human life, it is unavoidable that people will download content from the world wide web. With the example of Spotify, an extremely efficient and accessible music app you can download entire albums at the tip of your finger, all for the reasonable price of £9.99 per month, or £4.99 for students (a main target audience). Whilst this is a great resource, it is having a negative impact on music stores that sell physical formats of music such as CD's and Vinyl.
However, on the positive note it is worth mentioning that Vinyl sales are actually on the rise again with the current trends at play. As a result of globalisation, distribution of these has become much easier for music shops and equally the customers. You can order your favourite albums online with a click of a button as most music stores now have a website in order to adapt with the growing industry.
