Violet wished she had more comfortable clothes to run away in. She only ran away with 3.92 because her parents hid $250 from her grandma. She went to the Henry ST settlement house to find Chloe. So Violet went on a train at the age of twelve by herself. She met a grumpy woman on the train to NY, Her name was Mrs. Renwick. She was anti-suffragist so she didn't think that women should have the right to vote or be doctors or reporters. She thinks all they should be doing is staying at home and sitting around and doing nothing. While Violet and Mrs. Renwick were on the train a man came calling out " CANDY CANDY anyone want CANDY!" Mrs. Renwick bought two pieces of candy for Violet they were burned tootsie rolls. They finally got to NY. Violet is never coming back because her family was glad she was gone.

So they went to the train station to try to find Chloe. But the bad part about was the conductor is racist. Violet was white so she could stay on, but Myrtle was black so she had to go into a colored car. The conductor wouldn't stop saying that. Violet spoke up and said "But she's a kid!". The conductor asked Myrtle " How old are you?" Myrtle lied and said "7😏". But the conductor still made her sit in the colored car.
The theme is...Stand up for what you believe in.

After Myrtle got in the car that old lady would not stop talking. So she went to the very back and Violet came. Violet felt very uncomfortable because she was the only white girl (person). The lady came right back into the back. Later on, they read that some people were coming after Mr. Martin, they think he did a crime. Violet and Myrtle could not let that happen. A few moments later Violet saw Mr. Martin on the Jim Crow Car. They stood in silence just looking at him. Then they realized that the guys looking for him were on the same train. He said, " I need to go!" He ran off the train and he said if they ask any questions just tell them he left the train and went that way (forward). The men asked about him but they were not going to tell them where he was because they love Mr. Martin. The girls were known to lie to men and act like they were stupid. So that's just what Violet did she told him a fake story. At first, he believed her but as the story went on he knew she was lying. He soon gave up and walked away. Then the train ride went on.
