Goals by DrRobbins

If presented with the learning goal, "LWBAT (Learners will be able to) understand effective course design," how could you improve it? If someone "understands" effective course design, what can they do that someone who doesn't "understand" it can't do?

If presented with the learning goal, "LWBAT understand effective course design, I will improve it by avoiding ambiguous verb such as understand. This week's notes and write made a good point about these words as "traps". Of course we can understand a lot of things but to demonstrate it is another story. If the statement is applied for this class, I would change it to this: LWBAT to identify, plan and create effective course design.

If someone understand effective course design, they will be able to align the goals, objectives and outcomes with the students seamlessly. Because, someone who does not understand will not understand how to be flexible for the students.

LWBAT understand effective course design when they can design an entire course that is then approved and implemented in their current or future teaching position. My intention with this is the goal will be similar to passing a field test or certification test. To understand is to be able to actually do something in the field. A second layer, LWBAT create an effective course design when their assessment tools and objectives match up, so that minimum 80% stakeholders involved report satisfaction and success when surveyed (written). Stakeholders will be sponsors, administration, students. Or, Learners have created an effective course design when "traditions, politics, and predilections of decision makers” are addressed to the satisfaction of all stakeholders (Brown & Green, 2016, p.93). The course is designed well when participants demonstrate satisfaction, change their behavior as planned, and funding/politics sustain the course long term.
