         <description><![CDATA[<p>Having spent a little time in the Zoom session, I realized that I have never given much thought to the internet and how it works. I now know that there are senders that send information, routers that carry the information and receivers that take those bits and recreate the message/information. Reminds me of Willy Wonka when he takes the big chocolate bar and transmits it in tiny pieces above the people's heads and puts it back together in a smaller size on the TV receiver.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I found both the article and the video to be easy to understand and I really enjoyed both. I learned about the connections and the network Hubs. In college in our dorm room we needed to have an ethernet hub that we all plugged our ethernet cables into. It was interesting to be able to make that connection to my experiences. I also learned about TCP, transmission control protocol. My previous wonder was about the 'scrambled' message and I discovered that TCP is what sorts the information and requests for a resend if all the information did not arrive.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I know that once you delete something that you post online, it's not necessarily "gone". It's still out there in cyberspace and you can't take it back, so teaching students internet safety and responsibility is extremely important, especially with the potential for cyberbullying.  I also know that routers take information and that information travels in a network.  </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I wonder why there are always so many cyber attacks on banks and hospitals?  With all this technology, shouldn't there be some way to protect our data, so it's not so vulnerable?  I keep thinking of all the different ways I've had to create a password. You'd think that the experts would be able to make it "foolproof" or "hack-proof".  Is that even possible?</p>]]></description>

The video was helpful in explaining in how the data gets sent, particularly with the space shuttle example, and how a song from Spotify plays on your device, which many times we assume it's direct, which it is not. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>What I know about networks and the internet is that anything stored and put onto it will be on there forever. It can be accessed by the proper people even if it is deleted. I also know that it can lag based on many factors. There could be too many people accessing the routers, parts of the information is still not connecting or even issues with construction making the signal weak. It is such a complex concept yet completely a part of everyones everyday life. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>It is so facinating that the internet started with just two computers. I recall actaully having a home desktop when I was a kid. The internet had to be connected to my phoneline and the house phone could not be used simultaneously. I compare that to now where I can get internet signal on my phone in most places. The article kinda mapped that out for me. I also didnt really realize until now that the internet would be soo slow if it worked in sending whole information instead of packets. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I learned that a computer use to just be connected to another in the early days. I remember phases of the internet like the article stated. I had a home desktop that had to be connected to the internet with a long cord. The cord was also connected to the home phone line and if the internet was being used then the phone couldn't be used. I also learned that spliting information up into packets actually allows us to get information faster. Sending it whole would only dely the information. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>I learned that the evolution of networking actually started very simply - with just two computers connected by a direct wire using electrical voltages to represent 1s and 0s. This could be a great starting point for teaching kids, as we could create an art project where two students first exchange "binary messages" using simple patterns (like dots and dashes) before we move into more complex network concepts.</p></li><li><p>The video provides a brilliant analogy comparing data packets to moving a space shuttle - explaining how large items need to be broken down into smaller pieces for transport, just like a large image or song must be broken into packets. This could inspire a creative art lesson where students create a large mural that must be "transported" across the classroom in smaller pieces, with each piece being labeled as a packet - much like a real space shuttle's parts need tracking and reassembly.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I already knew that computers had their own address but I didn't realize how important it this was, to make sure information is shared to the right computer. Eye opening was the analogy of how a packet of information travels and comparing it to a car traveling in traffic. I, also, learned that there isn't a direct path for information to travel but instead there are options to help keep the flow of information. </p>]]></description>

After our discussion on January 7th, I now know that we send information, which routers then take and carry. Then, receivers take those bits of information and recreate what was sent.          <description><![CDATA[<p>As someone who "existed" before internet, the way information (on any subject) is instantly available and sent through the network still amazes me.  What do I know about the network?  I know it allows us to request, send, and receive information on any subject.  We get the information almost instantly...after it's traveled through a web of smaller networks. </p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

Specifically, in the video, I learned that information doesn't have one direct line/direct path, and that there are tens and billions of bits that carry information. </p><p><br/></p><p>I also learned about a handful of words related to networks and the internet that I have maybe heard of before -- but didn't quite understand what they were in the world of tech. For example, I have heard about "cabling", "switch", and "hub", but not in the context of tech! It was neat to read on these.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>I found both the video and article to be very interesting and educational. I may even show the video to my students to help explain better how the internet works! In the video I learned that whenever you request a song on your device, such a Spotify,&nbsp;it sends a song broken up into many packets. When your packets arrive, TCP does a full&nbsp; inventory and sends back acknowledgments of each packet received. If all packets are there, TCP&nbsp; signs for your delivery and you’re done. </p><p><br/></p><p>In the article I learned that each computer has a network interface card (NIC) that manages data encapsulation. Errors during data transmission can occur, so a check-field is added to each data frame to detect any issues. The evolution of these networks helped establish the internet protocol, marking significant progress over several decades in networking technology.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The article and the video discuss how computers work together in networks, like the internet to make life easier for teachers like us!  Long ago, computers were connected with wires, but this has changed.  Connections went to the rings and hubs and have then evolved into the hubs and switches (and these make the internet more efficient)--which I totally take for granted.  </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Just wow. I know that computers can connect to share information, and these connections create networks. The internet is the biggest network, powering things like electricity, water, transportation, and even schools. Early networks connected computers directly, but as more were added, new methods like rings, buses, and ethernet made sharing easier.          <description><![CDATA[<p>As a kindergarten teacher, I approach the concepts of networks and the internet with enthusiasm and simplicity, even though I don’t have all the technical details down at a computer scientist level. Using books like <em>Hello Ruby: Expedition to the Internet</em> and <em>Journey Inside the Computer: Adventures in Computing</em>, I’m able to provide my students with a friendly, imaginative introduction to these complex topics. I explain that a network is like a group of computers or devices holding hands, passing messages to each other to share information. I describe the internet as a giant playground where computers can meet, talk, and share pictures, videos, or even play games together. By breaking it down into concepts they can relate to—like how friends share toys and messages—I help them build a simple understanding of how computers communicate with each other.</p><p>While I don’t know every intricate detail about how networks and the internet function on a technical level, I have a general grasp of the big picture, which I use to inspire curiosity and exploration in my students. I focus on foundational concepts like communication, connection, and sharing in a way that sparks their natural curiosity and encourages problem-solving. I also introduce the idea that, just like we need to follow rules when playing with friends, we need to use the internet safely. Even though I’m still learning and growing in my own understanding of computer science, I’m committed to continuing my journey. As I continue my own learning in computer science, I will grow alongside my students, expanding my understanding of these systems so that I can continue to guide them on their path toward exploring the world of technology with confidence and curiosity!</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>As a kindergarten teacher, I often find myself marveling at the incredible ways that networks and the internet allow people and computers to connect, even across the world. I wonder how all the information and messages travel so quickly from one computer to another, like magic happening behind the scenes. It’s amazing to think about how millions of computers can talk to each other through invisible wires and signals, sharing knowledge and connecting us in ways we never could have imagined just a few decades ago. I also wonder about the safety of it all—how do we make sure that everyone is using the internet in a safe and kind way, especially when young children start exploring this vast digital world?</p><p>What excites me most is the endless possibilities the internet holds for my students as they grow. I wonder how, as they learn more about technology, they will unlock new ways to use the internet for creativity, learning, and problem-solving. It’s fascinating to think about how we, as teachers, can guide them in understanding these concepts, even at such an early age. I’m excited to explore these questions alongside my students, nurturing their curiosity and helping them start their own journeys in understanding the digital world. Even though I don’t have all the answers yet, I’m eager to discover them with my young learners and watch them grow into confident, thoughtful digital citizens.</p>]]></description>

The article also clarified the evolution of network structures, such as the shift from fully meshed networks to more efficient designs like ring and bus topologies. These changes helped solve the challenges of connecting multiple computers, as seen in early networking with Ethernet cables and the development of hubs and switches to improve communication efficiency.</p><p>I also learned how data is transferred within these networks. The concept of "encapsulation" stood out to me, where data is packaged with source and destination addresses, much like sending a letter in an envelope, ensuring that the right computer receives the right information. While the article discussed advanced technical details, the key takeaway for me as a kindergarten teacher is how networks function to connect computers and devices, allowing information to flow seamlessly between them. This knowledge helps me better understand the complex systems behind the internet, even as I continue to explore and learn more about the technical aspects in the future.</p>]]></description>
