It was a time of rebirth and growth, quite unlike the gloomy emptiness of winter, which is why he wrote so positively about it. On the other side, the most negative and pessimistic time of year seemed to be autumn, and not winter, surprisingly. While winter was cold and unforgiving, it did not seem to depress Basho quite as much as the dying and decay of autumn did. “Autumnal thoughts” is a phrase implied in several of his poems, and they seem to convey his awareness of the fleetingness of time.
