The writer uses signal words to differentiate and compare present and the past. What makes the reader feel so connected is the fact that it is in the format of a journal. You know where the reader what day it is. This allows the reader to travel with the author as they travel through the story. This book is going to be a good read but since I have no prior knowledge with Syria I am already telling it is not going to be an easy one. I was able to come to the conclusion that the place the writer is in is very eerie based on how she describes it. I connect to this because although I come from a "good" community in the matter of seconds something horrible can happen. When walking you have to watch your surroundings; you never feel safe and I feel like that is how the writer is feeling. A lot of the political leaders have views that they feel strongly about but are not in the best interest of the civilians. The speaker uses words to present this to the reader. All of the actions taking place within the world of the book are being done for selfish reasons. The speaker has a hard time of dealing with the fact that the place she had once visited had changed so much. she isnt in denial, but often she chooses to reflect and certain places. Not only does this show the downfall of Syria, but the pain that the writer has to go through as they are dealing with such change. As someone who may not have known what the civil war in Syria was about could ultimately assume that it has to do something with terrorism. The reason why people are fighting the government is for justice. They feel that they deserve more as citizens and they have the right to fight for what they need as citizens. What is portrayed on the news is how Syria is going to "self explode" but it is bigger than that. Throughout reading the writer does a lot of reflecting. At one point they talk about a moment where they felt unsafe which is hard to believe. The writer has done so much reporting in unsafe spaces, which has shown their strength and courage. Not only have they grown physically but they have grown mentally too. This leaves the non Jews wondering if they should help, because they could possibly be punished. This selfishness is not only affecting the Jews but the non Jews too.
