Vocabulary words are a key component of a child's reading. The more vocabulary words a student knows the better understanding they will have of the text (Colorado, C. 2022). With a class that is diverse, it is important to use classroom pre-teaching strategies that will combine learning to help ELL learners while teaching them new words and allowing them to place the words in a context that will help to remember the words later. Some examples are role play, showing and pointing to pictures, using gestures, and having students read both words in Spanish and in English (Colorado, C. 2022).

Is a conscious plan of steps that helps students make sense of the text and help them to be in control of their reading comprehension (Adler, C. 2022). ELL students benefit from comprehension skills which will allow them to be able to follow the story, identify important events, master concepts and be able to complete assignments (Breiseth, L. 2009).

There are seven strategies that are proven to help improve text comprehension:
1-Monitoring comprehension
2-Metacognition
3-Graphic and Semantic organizers
4-Answering questions
5-Generating questions
6-Recognizing story structure
7-Summarizing

Teachers can go around the room and label items in English and Spanish. This will allow for students to work together in smaller groups to define the task (Adler, C. 2022). This helps students to develop and write their vocabulary, students can see the picture which will give them visual and content integration. Example:

La clase/El aula - Classroom

La pizarra/El pizarrón - Blackboard/Whiteboard

La tiza - Chalk

El marcador - Marker

El borrador - Eraser (for blackboards)

El escritorio/El pupitre - Desk

La silla/El banco - Chair

La mochila/El morral - Backpack

El libro - Book

El cuaderno - Notebook

El papel - Paper
