Learned some of the why behind guided notes/ fill in the blanks. I also liked the chip discussion method.

Would like to know how to make sure that students are utilizing their small group discussion time.

Discovered: IRE = Recitation Model; Large group discussions are not ideal for several reasons - speaking time, fighting for teacher’s attention, and lack of attention.

I would like to know more about the Socratic Seminars - how to facilitate and assess.

One question I had: How would an educator be inclusive with a student who is behind with readings prior to discussion or a student that is at a lower level academically?

I discovered IRE. This is something that I have done for years, now in the classroom but even before as a baseball instructor, I just did not know it was considered IRE. Reading through this chapter made me realize it is not the best approach to engaging students to have open discussions. Definitely something I will be trying to no longer use going forward.

How do these strategies apply to someone that is a beginning ELL? I am sure these are all great strategies but where do we place a student that struggles with English? Do we place them with a native English speaker in hopes that they will learn from them, or do we not place them with an English speaker because they may not fully understand everything he/she is saying?
