The Spark That Lit My Passion

It was evident from a young age that I had a theatrical spirit. I would often drag my family or friends into my dramatic pretend play and insist they follow my direction (you could say I have loosened up since my toddler years). As I grew up, I loved seeing live shows and even got involved in a few community theatre productions of my own. In seventh grade I took a theatre class after losing interest for a few years. My teacher was so engaging and caring, I loved to be there. I did it again the next year... and then it was time for high school. In those four years, I had amazing experiences and amazing theatre teachers that supported my interests and taught me so much. I was secretary of our thespian troupe during my senior year. I worked on a few shows (my favorite one was Clue!) and made so many friends. I laugh sometimes when I say it out loud, but I loved high school theatre so much that I chose to do it for the rest of my life!

I chose to come to the University of Arkansas to Major in Theatre and Drama Education as it is the only school in-state that offers Drama Education as a major! I was definitely nervous to start this phase of my life, especially because I never truly considered being an educator. I haven't taken any education classes other than Intro to Tech in Ed (this one) but I have been in several theatre classes. I did take a few teaching courses in high school where I got to visit all sorts of classrooms around Fayetteville and eventually interned in a 5th grade science class. I was very excited to continue my theatre education/experience and luckily it has been going great! I get to assistant stage manage The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (musical) this spring! I also got a work study job at Theatre Squared, an old teacher recommended it and I love it. Feels full circle.

Who knows what is to come my way, but I am hopeful for good things. In the next few years, I hope to expand my connections, experience, and knowledge in my field to feel better prepared to begin my career after graduation in 2028. I would love to intern with my high school theatre teacher since he is just down the road at FHS. He was a good role model for me, I will definitely be borrowing some of his tactics. I am not sure where I will be starting out, but I do like taking one step at a time. Of course, I would love to see and be involved in as many productions as I can! It would be beneficial to have a good amount of my own theatre skills under my belt before passing that on to teens, whether I am backstage or on stage.
